Euphoria is back, but not everyone is feeling euphoric.
After a four-year break, HBO’s teen drama has returned with a significantly different Season 3. The new season is set five years after the last, with the characters now navigating life after school and figuring out their futures. Unfortunately, many fans are disappointed with the direction the show has taken, citing questionable creative choices that have made this one of the lowest-rated seasons so far.
The third season of Euphoria has received disappointing reviews. It currently has a 54% audience score and a 44% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the lowest-rated season of the show so far. Fans point to increasingly controversial storylines, particularly those involving characters like Cassie Howard (Sydney Sweeney), as a major reason for the negative reception.
| Season/Spinoff | Audience Rating | Critic Rating |
| Euphoria Season 1 | 84% | 80% |
| Euphoria Season 2 | 80% | 78% |
| Euphoria Season 3 | 54% | 44% |
| Trouble Don’t Last Always | 85% | 97% |
| F*ck Anyone Who’s Not a Sea Blob | 84% | 96% |
Viewers have voiced their dissatisfaction with the current season of Euphoria, and also with the show’s creator, Sam Levinson. The character Cassie, played by Sydney Sweeney, is depicted attempting to earn money through OnlyFans, and a recent viral video showed her in a controversial cosplay that appeared to involve age play. The season’s first episode also featured Cassie dressed in a dog costume with a leash and collar.
A recent scene featuring Zendaya’s character, Rue, and Chloe Cherry’s character involved them swallowing drugs, seemingly to transport them. This scene has sparked controversy, with many viewers finding it disturbing and describing it as deeply unpleasant for both actresses.
Even with some debate around certain scenes, the actors are still receiving praise. For example, Zendaya’s performance, showing both fear and relief after narrowly escaping a gunshot, is being widely celebrated.
As a big fan of Euphoria, I have to admit, season 3 feels… different. While the show’s always been known for tackling tough topics, some viewers – myself included – are starting to wonder if it’s crossed a line. The first episode is now streaming on HBO Max if you want to see what I mean and make up your own mind.
