Be warned, major spoilers are ahead for the movie Eternity (2025)! Director David Freyne clarifies the choice made by Joan at the film’s conclusion. Elizabeth Olsen plays Joan, who must decide between two men to spend eternity with: Luke (Callum Turner), her late husband who died in the Korean War, and Larry (Miles Teller), the man she shared her life with.
Towards the film’s conclusion, Joan initially appears to choose Luke, and they plan a life together in a secluded cabin. However, she quickly realizes she’s made a mistake, recognizing that she was swept away by the impulsiveness of young love. Ultimately, she reconnects with Larry, and they build a life together in the suburbs.
In a conversation with Liam Crowley from ScreenRant about the movie Eternity, Freyne discussed Joan’s decision to choose Larry. She explained that while they might find happiness together, that outcome isn’t necessarily permanent. However, within the story, Joan follows her heart and makes the choice she believes is best, even though she could have ended up with Luke instead.
Liam Crowley wonders if Joan and Larry truly find happiness at the end, considering they’ll be fugitives for the rest of their lives.
David Freyne points out that romantic comedies typically show couples living ‘happily ever after,’ but real life isn’t like that. He suggests that eventually, even those perfect couples would face new problems, and the woman might even wonder if she made the right choice. That’s just how life works – we always second-guess ourselves. While the ending should be satisfying and feel genuine, it shouldn’t necessarily be predictable. Ultimately, she chose the person – Larry – who best fits who she is today.
Liam Crowley: Do you think Luke has found happiness as well?
David Freyne says Luke is enjoying Winter Wonderland and seems to be doing well.
The romantic comedy has a happy ending, with Joan and Larry reunited for eternity. However, Joan bent the afterlife’s rules – even venturing into purgatory – to find Larry, which could disrupt the balance and mean they’re always on the run.
Freyne generally views their relationship in Eternity as a good experience. The film suggests that Joan probably won’t regret her choices, considering the sacrifices she made. Because of how far she went for Larry, it seems their relationship will likely last.
She explained that while Luke had been a significant part of her life for many years, she needed to prioritize the decades of happiness she’d found with Larry. Freyne’s words also suggest a positive outcome for her former love, whose “Winter Wonderland” journey seems to be going well even without her.
Despite the possibility that things could fall apart years later, Joan ultimately seemed to make the best decision in Eternity. By choosing Larry, she showed she was prioritizing a practical future and valuing the life they’d already created, rather than dwelling on past desires.
