Emma Thompson Gets Real About Filming The Harry Potter Movies: ‘I Don’t Mean To Be Rude…’

Reflecting on notable scenes during HBO’s 20th Anniversary reunion special, it appears that the Harry Potter franchise held significant importance to the cast members. However, for certain actors who had less prominent roles in the films, there seems to be a different narrative. For instance, Emma Thompson, who portrayed Professor Trelawney with a smaller part, shares candid insights into her filming experience.

In contrast to Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint, whose lives were deeply intertwined with the world of Harry Potter, it seems that those who held smaller but impactful roles may have more easily transitioned back into non-magical (Muggle) life. Similarly, Thompson isn’t alone in showing a lack of excitement for the series. Miriam Margolyes, who portrayed Professor Sprout, also expressed indifference towards Harry Potter, as she had minimal screen time.

At a recent discussion during the Locarno Film Festival, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Emma Thompson candidly shared insights about her experience portraying Professor Trelawney and the impact that her brief tenure within the franchise had on her.

To clarify, this particular aspect isn’t central to my creative pursuit… Please accept my apologies if it seems disrespectful to those who appreciate Harry Potter. Truth be told, I had a brief role in the production, complete with glasses and hair styling, after which I was handsomely compensated. I am truly thankful for the opportunity they provided me.

As a movie reviewer, I can empathize with Emma Thompson’s sentiments about not aiming to be “rude” in her portrayal of Hogwarts professor Trelawney. Although she graced our screens prominently in the third installment, ‘Prisoner of Azkaban,’ her appearances were brief in ‘Order of the Phoenix’ and ‘Deathly Hallows: Part 2.’ This suggests that her bond with the Harry Potter universe might not be as intimate as some fans may imagine.

In fact, this resonates with me a bit like Harry Melling’s portrayal of Dudley Dursley – another character whose filming experience within the Potter realm was somewhat limited, confined to short scenes before returning to his normal life.

Despite Professor Trelawney having a relatively minor part in the “Harry Potter” series, her significance cannot be overlooked. Often underestimated, this Divination teacher deserved more recognition for her most notable act – foretelling the prophecy to Dumbledore that ultimately led to the Potters’ downfall. In “The Prisoner of Azkaban,” the somewhat detached professor inadvertently told Harry during a trance that the one who betrayed his parents would return, although he initially believed she was referring to Sirius Black and not Peter Pettigrew.

Beyond being an unforgettable character herself, Professor Trelawney was also brought to life brilliantly by the actress who played her. Emma Thompson, known for her exceptional roles in films like “Nanny McPhee” and “Sense and Sensibility”, seemed almost unrecognizable as the Hogwarts teacher. Her portrayal of the character’s quirks and unpredictability with such humor made this minor character stand out significantly, at least to me it seems.

Emma Thompson’s role in Harry Potter may not have been a defining moment in her career, but she expressed feelings of gratitude for the opportunity. As of now, it remains unknown who will succeed Thompson as Professor Trelawney in the upcoming Harry Potter TV series. However, I will always remember Thompson as the actress who first brought this cherished character to life.
