Emma Stone has rapidly established herself as one of this century’s most respected actresses, not only due to her exceptional acting skills, but also because of her dedication to the roles she chooses. She has switched her hair color among brunette, blonde, and red, but has never gone bald. In her role for the film Bugonia, Emma braved shaving her head for the first time, and it was certainly no walk in the park.
The actress who played in “The Help” is set to collaborate once more with director Yorgos Lanthimos, this time starring in his upcoming film titled “Bugonia,” slated for release in fall 2025. This marks their fourth collaboration together, following projects such as “Kinds of Kindness,” the award-winning “Poor Things,” and “The Favourite.” However, unlike their previous collaborations, the actress mentioned to IndieWire that Lanthimos’ new project will feature a significant transformation in her appearance that cannot be avoided.
As soon as I glanced at the script, it became clear that the only option for me would be to shave my head.
Even though she knew it was coming and had Jesse Plemons ready with the scissors, Stone admitted that it was still difficult when the time arrived for the actual haircut. Before shouting “Action,” she experienced a fleeting moment of uncertainty.
For about a year and half, I had been prepared for shaving my head, and when the day arrived, they were arranging four cameras since we needed one take and we were mainly filming on VistaVision, an exquisite yet temperamental camera that often malfunctions. As they set up the cameras, it was taking a considerable amount of time, which started to make me anxious.

As a movie critic, I must confess that bald pate is not an uncommon sight among actors, what with Millie Bobby Brown setting a precedent. Yet, in the case of this performance, the actual shaving was performed live on set – a single attempt to get it perfect, as there was no retake once the cameras started rolling.
The Eddington actress shared that she took comfort in knowing her mother also had to be bald due to cancer rather than choice, but unlike her mother, it was not for something she loved. Remaining focused on her role, the Zombieland actress maintained a serious demeanor as Plemons trimmed her hair.
In this tribute to the film “Save The Green Planet,” the actor from “Civil War” and his partner, portrayed by Aidan Delbis, abduct a powerful CEO (Stone), whom they suspect is actually an extraterrestrial on a mission to destroy Earth. As depicted in the trailer, Plemons’ character Teddy explains that he shaved Michelle’s hair to prevent her from reaching out to her spaceship.
The actress from “Crazy Stupid Love” seemed uncertain about the drastic haircut, yet I believe she successfully carried it out. Despite that, I find myself constantly imagining Tilda Swinton’s look from “Doctor Strange.
As a cinephile, I must say, Stone’s bold pixie cut may grab headlines, but it’s her acting talent that truly grabs our hearts. While she flaunts her short tresses once more, I find this style to be one of her most striking.
Eagerly anticipating her red-carpet debut for this upcoming movie, my excitement is not merely about the glitz and glamour, but primarily for the film itself. The trailer promises a performance that could very well stand alongside her finest works. I can hardly wait!
Be sure to catch Bugonia when it releases in theaters worldwide on Friday, October 31st.
