Be warned, this contains spoilers for Dark Winds season 4, episode 4! The latest episode of Dark Winds brought Emma and Joe Leaphorn together again after a period of being apart.
In the latest episode of Dark Winds (season 4, episode 4), actress Deanna Allison discusses the heartfelt reunion between Leaphorn and his wife, Emma. Emma left Joe after season 3, and has been living in the city, working at a hospital. Leaphorn’s new case unexpectedly brought him to her, leading to an emotional encounter and offering insight into what this means for their relationship.
Allison discussed the upcoming reunion of Emma and Leaphorn in season 4 of Dark Winds during an interview with Tatiana Hullender from ScreenRant. Despite lingering tension between them, Emma was caught off guard by a call from Leaphorn, leading her to question his motives considering their complicated past and his unexpected appearance in Los Angeles. This creates a mix of emotions for her.
ScreenRant asked about the first scene back, where my character is on the phone with Leaphorn. They noted a mix of nervousness and a willingness to have lunch with him, and wanted to know what my character was feeling more strongly – relief that he’s in town, or concern about his arrival?
Deanna Allison described the character’s primary feeling as concern, stemming from a long period of not hearing from her husband. Her friend, Helen, had previously advised her to reach out, but months had passed with no contact. The script highlighted this silence, effectively showing the character’s absence and the impact on her connection to the community and her relationship with Leaphorn. She’s been busy with work, focusing on maintaining her own well-being and finding a new normal without constant worry. It seems neither of them initiated contact during that time, giving each other space. So, when she finally receives a call, she’s understandably concerned and wondering why he’s reaching out now, given their difficult past and the prolonged silence. Despite her worry, she’s also likely relieved and anxious to hear from him.
Emma is happily working at a hospital in Los Angeles. After the third season of Dark Winds ended, it seemed unlikely that she and her partner would reconnect. There was a lot of unresolved tension between them, but Joe decided he needed to reach out to her after a long period of silence.
It was a tough choice for him, but it worked out when she suggested they have lunch. However, Allison notes that Emma still has mixed emotions about their past. Emma has also rediscovered a sense of direction in the city, and might not find that if she went back home with him.
As of episode 4 of season 4, the two characters in Dark Winds haven’t fully reconciled, but the show is setting the stage for them to reconnect. This will probably help repair their relationship and address the issues from season 3 that caused them to split up.
It’s uncertain if Emma will return from LA, particularly since she’s enjoying her job there. Joe can’t make her come back, and trying to could damage their relationship even more. He needs to apologize and make things right simply because it’s the right thing to do, not to get anything in return.
In season 4 of Dark Winds, this new outlook seems to be guiding his actions and could finally bring him and his wife closer together. But as the investigation intensifies and the risks increase, it’s unclear how much this will ultimately change him.
New episodes of Dark Winds season 4 air Sundays on AMC and AMC+.
