I’m a huge fan of Alamo Drafthouse! They aren’t a massive chain – only around two dozen theaters – but that’s part of what makes them special. They really focus on making going to the movies an amazing experience, and they’ve built a really loyal following because of it.
The Alamo Drafthouse has a loyal following because it strives to create a great moviegoing experience for everyone. They’re known for enforcing rules, like having policies about children attending mature films and asking patrons to silence their phones. Now, they’re updating how food orders are taken – moving away from the traditional pen-and-paper system to a new app. Actor Elijah Wood, who often shares his thoughts publicly, expressed his disappointment with this change on Twitter.
This decision goes against everything the Alamo Drafthouse stands for and deeply disappoints those who cherish going to the movies there. It’s a really unfortunate mistake. https://t.co/ByC5fB1hbv January 20, 2026
I’ve been following the reaction to Wood’s tweet, and wow, it’s really taken off! So many people seem to feel the same way I do about this change – we’re all pretty frustrated. It’s amazing to see him speak up, and I really think his voice could make a difference. People are cheering him on and sharing their own thoughts, like…
- you are always on the right side of history, elijah wood. on this, on star wars opinions—the list is endless. – @jessjoho
- frodo out here yelling remember the alamo like the crossover i never knew i needed – @fem_boyardee
- See @alamodrafthouse you’ve even upset Elijah Wood. Do fucking better. We can’t have anything nice – @brandonsedai
- Get their ass Elijah. Also tell them to make the food good – @kapposyan
- THE RING BEARER HAS SPOKEN! – @KaptainZorro
It seems like people either don’t mind using their phones during movies, or they strongly dislike those who do. Alamo Drafthouse has always been against phone use, making it clear that anyone disturbing other moviegoers would be asked to leave. They’ve even made several funny public service announcements about it, and many of those videos have become very popular online.
If you know Alamo Drafthouse, you probably know they don’t allow phones in the theater. That’s why their new plan to use an app for ordering is so surprising – it’ll actually require customers to use their phones, reversing their long-held policy.
The movie theater chain will likely continue its policy against talking and texting, but it may be hard to enforce since many people need to use their phones during films. For a lot of viewers, the problem isn’t what someone is doing on their phone, but simply seeing a phone being used at all.
I haven’t been to many Alamo Drafthouses, but I remember the first time being my first experience with a movie theater that offered full food and drink service right to your seat. It felt really new and different back then, and it definitely changes how you experience a movie. I’m curious if the new mobile ordering system will mean fewer servers walking around, and if that benefit will be worth the potential distraction of everyone looking at their phones. We’ll just have to see how it works out.
Alamo Drafthouse is planning to launch mobile ordering at its theaters over the course of 2026.
