With March underway, Tubi has added a new selection of free movies, including the action-packed thriller , featuring Dwayne Johnson, originally released eight years ago. It’s definitely worth a watch!
The action movie Skyscraper, starring Dwayne Johnson, is now available on Tubi as of March 1st. In the film, Johnson plays a former FBI agent who has to save his family from a burning skyscraper in Hong Kong – the world’s tallest building – after a group of terrorists sets it ablaze and tries to blackmail the building’s owner.
Rawson Marshall Thurber was the writer, producer, and director of Skyscraper, continuing his working relationship with Dwayne Johnson after their 2016 film, Central Intelligence. They later collaborated again on the 2021 Netflix movie Red Notice. The film also features a supporting cast including Neve Campbell, Chin Han, Roland Møller, and Pablo Schreiber.
Skyscraper Is Best Viewed as Mindless Summer Entertainment
Okay, so Skyscraper is basically about one guy taking on a bunch of bad guys inside a super tall building, and honestly, everyone immediately noticed how much it felt like Dwayne Johnson’s take on Die Hard. A lot of people think that’s why it didn’t do amazing at the box office – it reminded us too much of other movies like Die Hard and even The Towering Inferno. Still, even though it wasn’t a blockbuster, it still made over $300 million worldwide, which is pretty impressive!
While the plot of Skyscraper was criticized as being unoriginal, Dwayne Johnson’s acting and the film’s thrilling moments were widely praised. Despite a 48% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, earning it a ‘rotten’ label, critic Kip Mooney of Central Track described it as enjoyable, if not particularly deep, summer entertainment. Interestingly, audiences seem to like the film more than critics, giving it a 67% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
What’s Next for Dwayne Johnson?
I was so impressed to see Dwayne Johnson take on such a different role last year! He really transformed himself to play MMA fighter Mark Kerr in The Smashing Machine, and it was fantastic – it even earned him his first Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Drama. I’m really excited to see what he does next!
Dwayne Johnson has several exciting projects coming up, including a new crime drama set in Hawaii directed by Martin Scorsese, and a significant role in Darren Aronofsky’s thriller, Breakthrough. But first, he’ll be returning to action films, though these movies will be quite different in style from Skyscraper.
Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is returning as the beloved character Maui in Disney’s live-action version of Moana. The movie was filmed in 2024 in both Atlanta and Hawaii. Newcomer Catherine Laga’aia will star as Moana in her first film role.
Dwayne Johnson will be back as Dr. Xander “Smolder” Bravestone in the next Jumanji movie, which will be the fourth and last in the series. Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, and Nick Jonas are also returning for the action-packed sequel, expected to be released in November 2025.
Skyscraper is available to stream on Tubi.
