Be warned, this contains spoilers for Yellowstone Season 1, Episode 4, “Start With A Bullet.” In the episode, Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler face a difficult decision. When they learn their entire herd of black angus cattle has contracted foot-and-mouth disease, they take a drastic action that could jeopardize their future in South Texas.
Rip and Beth, with the help of their ranch hands Azul Ramos and Zachariah Moss, were forced to kill their entire herd of black Angus cattle. It was a difficult and brutal decision, but essential because there was no way to protect the cows from a deadly outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease.
As Beth and Rip dealt with their cattle, Carter befriended a new person, not realizing Beth was intentionally keeping him separate from the Dutton Ranch. At the same time, Oreana Lynn Jackson was confined to the 10-Petals Ranch by her grandmother, Beulah Jackson.
Killing Dutton Ranch’s Herd Breaks Beth & Rip
The world of Yellowstone often features violence towards both animals and people, but the recent decision to cull the herd was particularly devastating. Rip Wheeler took on the incredibly difficult task of euthanizing the animals himself, wanting to protect Beth and the other ranch hands from the lasting trauma it would cause.
Rip shot and killed all the cows, and it was especially heartbreaking for the calf they’d rescued from Montana. Beth and Rip had bravely saved the calf from a fire that destroyed their ranch near Dillon, Montana, and it had become part of the Dutton Ranch herd.
Sadly, the young calf also had foot-and-mouth disease and couldn’t be saved. Losing his entire herd was devastating for Rip. At the end of the fourth episode of Dutton Ranch, Rip was completely broken and spent the night alone, lying silently under the Texas stars.
I’m just heartbroken for Beth. She really thought moving to Rio Paloma and building this black angus beef business would be her success story, and it was finally starting to happen! She’d just landed a deal supplying beef to a top steakhouse in Dallas – Dutton Ranch beef was going to be a big deal. Now, with the herd gone, everything she and Rip invested is just…gone. We’re talking millions in lost profit. It’s devastating to see all that work wiped out.
It’s unclear how Beth will manage to resolve the difficult situation she, Rip, and Carter are currently facing.
Beth & Rip’s Fiery Revenge Was Not Smart
In episode 2 of Dutton Ranch, the ranch’s cattle became sick after they bought a bull for $10,000. Beth investigated and discovered the vet who supposedly approved the bull’s health papers didn’t recognize her or the ranch, meaning the bull’s medical records and test results were faked.
Okay, let me tell you, if you needed a classic Yellowstone power move, this episode delivered. Beth and Rip tracked down the guy who sold them that sick bull, and let’s just say he regretted it. Rip paid him a visit – a very intense visit – in his trailer, sending a clear message. But they didn’t stop there. Rip then soaked the whole trailer in kerosene, and Beth… well, Beth finished the job with a perfectly timed flick of her cigarette. It was brutal, satisfying, and exactly the kind of retribution you expect from these characters.
The scene of Beth and Rip walking away from the fire was striking, but their actions weren’t particularly wise. Rip failed to question the cattle broker about the sick bull – or whether someone else had orchestrated the situation, possibly from the rival 10-Petals Ranch. Ultimately, they lost their ranch without discovering who was responsible.
Will Carter Leave Beth & Rip’s Dutton Ranch?
Rather than attend school, Carter chose to find temporary work on a different ranch. He started working for Dwight White, a friendly older cowboy who appreciated the help with tasks around his property. Carter enjoyed spending time with Dwight, who even showed him his pet African leopard, Xena.
Carter forming a friendship reveals his underlying feeling of being stuck at the Dutton Ranch. Though nineteen years old, he relies heavily on Beth and Rip, despite not being their son. While Beth insists he finish high school to get an education, Carter is a young man eager to make his own choices and live his own life.
Carter might decide to leave the Dutton Ranch. He initially believed Beth approved of Oreana, especially when she suggested he date her without restrictions. However, he later discovered Beth and Rip had deliberately kept them apart while working on the ranch. Despite this, Carter accusing Beth of lying is ironic, considering he previously lied to her about attending school.
It’s still unclear what Carter’s long-term living arrangements are at the Dutton Ranch. While Beth and Rip are raising him, they aren’t his legal parents, and haven’t officially adopted or become his guardians. The show hasn’t revealed Carter’s last name, and it probably isn’t Dutton or Wheeler.
Carter & Oreana Are Stuck At Their Family’s Ranches
Beth discovered Oreana in a compromising situation with Carter. Showing a newfound composure – a change for her on the Dutton Ranch – Beth didn’t react with anger, but instead calmly drove Oreana back to her home at the 10-Petals Ranch. During the drive, Oreana complained about her grandmother, Beulah, and explained that Beulah wouldn’t allow her to move out.
Like Carter, who relies on Beth and Rip, Oreana is also trapped at her family’s ranch. Her mother, Beulah, has taken away her independence by confiscating her credit cards and car, a green Ford Bronco. To ensure Oreana stays put, Beulah has assigned Miguel, one of the ranch hands, to watch over her. Miguel is doing his job well, preventing Oreana from leaving to see Carter.
There’s still a lot we don’t know about Oreana. She told Beth she’s dropped out of school, meaning she’s likely around the same age as Carter, or maybe even older. Beulah is determined to have Oreana inherit the 10-Petals, which is why she’s keeping her in Rio Paloma, but Oreana doesn’t want the responsibility that comes with her family’s history.
As the Dutton Ranch story unfolds, it’s likely that Carter, Oreana, or both will eventually become independent and leave their family’s ranch.
Dutton Ranch Reveals Beulah & Everett’s Past
The fourth episode of Dutton Ranch revealed more about the history between Everett McKinney and Beulah Jackson, hinting at a past romantic relationship. The episode strongly suggests Everett is the father of Rob-Will, and that they also had another son named Levi who died. While it’s unclear if Everett and Beulah were ever married, it seems unlikely, as both Rob-Will and his daughter, Oreana, share the Jackson surname.
Joaquin Reyes, like Rob-Will, grew up as Beulah’s adopted son at the 10-Petals ranch. The story gets more complicated with Mariano Reyes, who contacted Beulah in episode 3 of Dutton Ranch and might be Joaquin’s father. It’s possible Mariano is the reason Beulah doesn’t want Joaquin to inherit the ranch.
The Jackson family seems just as troubled as the Duttons on Yellowstone, and it looks like they have even more hidden issues. As season one of the Dutton Ranch series moves past the halfway mark, Beth and Rip’s storylines could unexpectedly connect with the Jacksons and the 10-Petals, leading to significant consequences.
