I’m so excited for Dust Bunny, the new movie bringing back the world of Hannibal! It feels like a true follow-up to the series, and early reviews are really good. What’s even more amazing is that Bryan Fuller, the creator of Hannibal, is directing his first feature film, and he’s got Mads Mikkelsen back with him. It’s a dream come true for fans like me!
I’m so excited about Dust Bunny! I just saw that it premiered at TIFF and, even better, it’s already getting amazing reviews! As of today, 89% of critics on Rotten Tomatoes are recommending it, based on 35 reviews. Of course, that score might shift a little as more reviews come in. I can’t wait until it hits theaters on December 12th – then we’ll finally get to see what everyone’s talking about, and the audience score will start to appear too!
Bryan Fuller’s first feature film, Dust Bunny, tells the story of a young girl in New York City who thinks a monster under her bed has taken her family. She enlists the help of her neighbor—a professional hitman, played by Mads Mikkelsen—to destroy it.
The film stars Mads Mikkelsen, a BAFTA nominee known for Another Round, along with a talented cast including three-time Oscar nominee Sigourney Weaver (Aliens, Working Girl, Gorillas in the Mist), David Dastmalchian (from the Marvel and DC universes), Rebecca Henderson (Russian Doll), Sheila Atim (Bruised), Nóra Trokán, and Sute Zhao.
A review in ScreenRant gave Bryan Fuller’s horror thriller, starring Mads Mikkelsen, a score of 4 out of 10. Gregory Nussen found the film more cute than genuinely good, noting that while it mixes appealing visuals with dark subject matter, inconsistent humor and reliance on familiar tropes hold it back.
Despite some criticisms, “Dust Bunny” has generally received positive reviews. Critics describe it as a lively and imaginative horror story with fairy tale elements, showcasing the unique vision of its creator. Many reviewers praised its visually impressive design, genuine emotional core, and ability to evoke a sense of childhood wonder. The strong connection between the lead actors was also frequently mentioned, along with the film’s successful blend of sweetness, scares, and quirky humor, all while maintaining a solid emotional foundation.
Many viewers have described the film as feeling like a beautifully animated story brought to life, or a thrilling but not-too-scary adventure. They appreciate that it’s smart and respectful of its audience, while still being enjoyable for families. Reviewers particularly praised the director’s strong, unique style – especially his creative visuals and imaginative world – and some think this could make the film a future cult favorite.
However, some critics aren’t entirely sold. A few believe the film relies too much on being cute and quirky, which becomes annoying when the plot feels weak or starts to repeat itself. They also think the creative ideas don’t always come together smoothly. Despite these concerns, most agree that Dust Bunny‘s unique style and bold approach make it a film you won’t soon forget.
