‘Dune: Prophecy’ Reveals New Cast as Season 2 Begins Production

As Denis Villeneuve continues work on the third Dune movie, the team behind the TV series Dune: Prophecy has started filming its second season. Warner Bros. Discovery announced that the eight-episode season will be shot in Hungary, Jordan, and Spain, just like the first season, to maintain its stunning visuals. Along with this news, several new actors joining the cast were also revealed.

The second season of Dune: Prophecy will feature returning actors Emily Watson, Olivia Williams, Travis Fimmel, and others, along with new cast members Indira Varma (known for Coldwater and The Night Manager), Ashley Walters (Top Boy), and Tom Hollander (The White Lotus). While details about their characters haven’t been released, the story continues to unfold 10,000 years before the events of the original Dune books and films.

It’s unexpected that the second season of Dune: Prophecy will have eight episodes, two more than the first season’s six. Most streaming shows are either maintaining or reducing their episode counts due to rising production costs, so this is a departure from the norm. With filming now underway, Dune: Prophecy is currently projected to premiere on Max around late 2026 or early 2027.

Will ‘Dune: Prophecy’ Season 2 Be Released After ‘Dune: Part Three’?

HBO

The new series, Dune: Prophecy, is set 10,000 years before the events of Dune, and focuses on two sisters from the Harkonnen family. They’re fighting to protect humanity and lay the groundwork for the powerful Bene Gesserit order. Fans are particularly excited about Indira Varma joining the cast, as she previously played Ellaria Sand in Game of Thrones. Both shows share similar themes and storylines, and Varma’s experience with complex political maneuvering makes her a perfect fit for the manipulative world of the Bene Gesserit.

The third installment of the Dune series, currently titled Dune: Part Three, is planned for release on December 18, 2026. This film will be based on Frank Herbert’s novel Dune Messiah, and director Denis Villeneuve intends it to be the concluding film in his Dune trilogy. It remains to be seen how long the Dune: Prophecy series will continue after the third movie, and how much of the 10,000-year history leading up to the trilogy’s events it will cover. The production timeline suggests a strategy to build on the anticipated success of Dune: Part Three.
