‘Dune: Part Three’ Is an “Action-Packed Thriller,” Says Denis Villeneuve

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune films have been visually stunning and full of sci-fi action, but many viewers were particularly drawn to their dramatic, epic storytelling. Now, Villeneuve is back with Dune: Part Three, based on Frank Herbert’s novel Dune: Messiah. While some fans might worry this new film will simply repeat the formula of the first two, Villeneuve assures audiences that Part Three will feel different, focusing more on the story’s built-in suspense and conflict.

The filmmaker made the reveal while speaking to The Hollywood Reporter:

This movie feels very different from the earlier installments. Revisiting that world works because it feels necessary, not just nostalgic. While the first film was thoughtful and focused on a boy discovering a new place, and the second was a war story, this one is a fast-paced, gripping thriller – much more intense and action-driven.

The initial preview for Dune: Part Three, available below, only hints at what’s coming in the movie. Without giving away any plot points from Dune: Messiah, let’s just say Timothée Chalamet’s character, Paul Atreides, makes even more difficult choices in this next installment.

Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, and Florence Pugh are all returning for the next installment. Anya Taylor-Joy will have a bigger part this time as Alia Atreides, and Jason Momoa is back as Duncan Idaho, even though his character died in the first Dune movie. Joining the cast is Robert Pattinson, playing the unsettling villain Scytale, whose strange look is sure to disturb audiences.
