Dune 3 May Be Hiding Its Strangest Character In Plain Sight

The trailer for ‘Dune: Part Three’ gave fans their first exciting look at the conclusion of Denis Villeneuve’s epic trilogy. It showed snippets of key scenes and featured familiar characters like Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet), Chani (Zendaya), Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson), and Stilgar (Javier Bardem).

The upcoming Dune 3 will introduce several new faces alongside returning characters. We’ll see the children of Paul and Chani, and Robert Pattinson will play the new villain, Scytale. Jason Momoa returns as Hayt, a reimagined version of Duncan Idaho, and Anya Taylor-Joy will fully portray Alia Atreides after her brief appearance in Dune: Part Two.

Seeing all the characters in the Dune 3 trailer was exciting, but one important character from the book the movie is based on, Dune Messiah, hasn’t been revealed yet.

Edric Hasn’t Been Confirmed For Dune 3, But Is Necessary For The Story

In Frank Herbert’s Dune Messiah, a key character is Edric, an alien who appears fish-like. He’s a Navigator for the Spacing Guild, described as tall and vaguely human-shaped, but with fins for feet and large, webbed hands. Edric must live inside a tank filled with orange gas to stay alive.

In the story Messiah, the character of the fishy alien plays a crucial role as a plotter against Emperor Paul Atreides. Because he possesses a unique ability to remain hidden from Paul’s prescience—and vice versa—he effectively shields others, like Irulan and Scytale, allowing them to conspire without Paul detecting their plans.

Whether Edric would appear in Villeneuve’s Dune films has always been a point of discussion. He’s likely to be the most unusual character the series has presented so far, especially considering the films have largely focused on realistic characters or those created with full CGI.

I’m a little worried about Dune 3. They haven’t said anything about Edric, and we haven’t even heard a whisper about who might play him, which is making me anxious! He’s such a crucial character in the Messiah book, and even if Villeneuve does weave in parts of Children of Dune too, leaving Edric out would mean big changes to the story. That could really upset a lot of fans, myself included, because he’s so important!

If you’ve seen the trailer for Dune: Part Three, you won’t immediately spot the fish-like alien character, Edric. Instead of assuming he’s been removed from the film, it’s likely the filmmakers are intentionally concealing him in the footage. This is probably to keep his appearance and importance a secret until the movie is released, or even until viewers see it in theaters.

Dune 3’s Trailer Has Multiple Potential Edric Sightings

When watching the Dune 3 trailer, keeping Edric’s potential role in mind highlights a few interesting scenes. The most discussed is a shot of a large, floating container following Scytale into a room. We don’t see what’s inside, but there’s an orange or reddish glow suggesting a face might be within.

This could be a mobile version of Edric’s tank, carrying the fish-like being inside. Since Edric and Scytale often meet in secret to plan against Paul, this might show them traveling to one of those meetings. Alternatively, some believe the tank holds Hayt, and Scytale is preparing to deliver him to Paul as a ghola.

If this character is actually Hayt and not Edric, the trailer briefly shows him later on. We see unidentified figures moving a large container into the fortress while Alia is seated on the throne. If Villeneuve significantly changed Edric’s appearance and vehicle, the scene below might feature him.

It’s possible neither of those figures is Edric, but if not, there’s still a chance we can find him. We see a small spaceship heading towards what appears to be a Spacing Guild Heighliner, and another brief shot of a different black ship docking somewhere. These could be Edric, or his allies, arriving at one of their meetings.

While it’s uncertain if Dune: Part Three will include the Fremen’s aquatic aliens, it would be unexpected to exclude Edric, a key character, especially if Denis Villeneuve truly prefers Messiah, the book Edric appears in, as he has stated.
