As a huge animation fan, I was really excited to see the first trailer for DreamWorks’ only movie coming out this year, and it’s called Forgotten Island! I’ve been waiting for something new from them, and this looks promising.
In 2025, DreamWorks released a number of films, including adaptations like Dog Man, a new version of How to Train Your Dragon, and The Bad Guys 2. They also created a hybrid live-action/animated movie based on Gabby’s Dollhouse. However, Forgotten Island is different – it’s a completely original story, something DreamWorks hasn’t done since Orion and the Dark in 2024.
The new trailer for DreamWorks’ Forgotten Island follows high school friends Jo and Raissa as they journey to a magical island called Nakali. They must quickly work to save themselves and their friendship before their cherished memories fade away. You can watch the Forgotten Island trailer below.
The trailer, set to the iconic Simple Minds song “Don’t You (Forget About Me),” opens by showing how Jo and Raissa first became friends – while waiting outside the principal’s office back in 1990. Neither of them had a close friend before, but they quickly bonded and promised to be there for each other, no matter what life brought.
As Jo and Raissa approached graduation, tensions rose as they discussed their plans for the future. Jo encouraged Raissa to pursue her own dreams, rather than follow her parents’ expectations. While remembering happier times, strange events began to occur, and the two friends found themselves transported to a place called Nakali. They arrived on a beach, immediately facing a massive bird. “Where are we?” Raissa wondered.
Nakali, also called the Forgotten Island, is a perilous place where staying too long causes you to lose your memories. The friends become concerned when they realize they’ll start forgetting each other, and they make a promise to find a way home. The trailer concludes with Raissa having a panic attack, which Jo eases by playfully asking, “Who let the dogs out?” – a nod to the popular ’90s song by Baha Men.
Raissa continues the song, singing “Who who who who who,” and starts to breathe more normally. She thanks her friend, then steels herself and says they need to make a plan.
Joel Crawford, who co-directed and co-wrote Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, also worked on the upcoming film Forgotten Island with Januel Mercado. Mark Swift is producing Forgotten Island. Crawford’s previous DreamWorks credits include co-directing The Croods: A New Age and working as a story artist on films like Kung Fu Panda, Shrek Forever After, and Trolls.
H.E.R. and Liza Soberano star as the main characters, Jo and Raissa. The film also features Dave Franco, Lea Salonga, Jenny Slate, Manny Jacinto, Dolly de Leon, Jo Koy, and Ronny Chieng.
Forgotten Island will be released in theaters on Friday, September 25, 2026.
