Akira Toriyama’s work remains popular over time thanks to its memorable characters, who are more complex than typical heroes in the shonen genre. While Goku is the brave protagonist of *Dragon Ball*, many fans actually connect with Vegeta even more, and he arguably undergoes a more significant and compelling transformation throughout the series. Vegeta has evolved tremendously since he was first introduced.
Vegeta has grown much stronger and better at handling tough fights, and he’s become more willing to connect with others, moving away from his solitary ways. This leads him to start a family, which surprisingly adds complexity to his ancestry. His family history is quite unusual and scattered, making it all the more captivating.
King Vegeta Is Not Just Vegeta’s Father, But Also The Leader Of The Saiyans
The Saiyans were a powerful and proud race of warriors known for conquering planets, often using their incredibly strong Great Ape forms. They worked for Frieza, but his cruelty, along with the unpredictable nature of Beerus, ultimately led to the destruction of Planet Vegeta and its people. By the start of the Dragon Ball story, Planet Vegeta is gone, though we occasionally see flashbacks to the time when King Vegeta ruled and worked tirelessly to make his people stronger and more respected.
When Frieza destroys Planet Vegeta, King Vegeta is among those killed, and that’s essentially the end of his story. Unlike Goku’s father, Bardock, King Vegeta hasn’t been given much additional development later on. Bardock has become a more complex character in *Dragon Ball Super* and has even been shown transforming into different Super Saiyan forms in games and other media. King Vegeta, however, hasn’t received the same kind of attention or expanded backstory beyond his usual Great Ape form.
One of the most fascinating things about King Vegeta is that he wasn’t the first of his name – he was actually King Vegeta III, making his son, Prince Vegeta, the fourth in the lineage. This suggests the Vegeta family had ruled the Saiyans for at least two generations prior, playing a significant role in their history and growth. Interestingly, we never see Vegeta’s mother in *Dragon Ball*, and it’s unclear if she was even alive when Planet Vegeta was destroyed. While details about Vegeta’s family history remain a mystery, it’s clear King Vegeta had great confidence in his son.
Vegeta Is A Crowning Achievement In Saiyan Strength Who Has Kept His People Proud
Vegeta has adjusted to life on Earth, but he still carries a lot of the strict, proud attitude he had as a Saiyan prince. He takes his royal status very seriously, feeling responsible for preserving the Saiyan legacy and finding new worlds for them to conquer. With so few Saiyans left, Vegeta feels immense pressure with everything he does. He’s especially bothered when someone like Goku, who he sees as lower class, reaches his level of strength. His rivalry with Goku isn’t just about winning fights; it’s about defending his honor and refusing to be surpassed. This mindset shapes their entire relationship moving forward.
Vegeta eventually joins forces with the Z-Fighters and becomes one of Earth’s most powerful defenders. However, he’s always haunted by the history of his Saiyan race. He constantly struggles with feelings of inadequacy when other Saiyans surpass him, and he continues to grapple with his past actions while trying to understand his heritage.
Vegeta has also sparked a new age for the Saiyan race. They maintain their strength and honor, but without the cruelty and wickedness of the past. The idea of Vegeta building a life on Earth would have been shocking to his earlier self in *Dragon Ball Z*. Ultimately, Vegeta manages to preserve the Saiyan spirit and achieve things his father never imagined.
Tarble Is Vegeta’s Estranged Younger Brother
Since Planet Vegeta was destroyed, there haven’t been many Saiyans left, making it surprising that Vegeta had a younger brother, Tarble, who wasn’t mentioned for most of the series. Tarble first appears in *Dragon Ball: The Return of Son Goku and Friends!!*, a special released to celebrate the 40th anniversary of *Weekly Shonen Jump*. The story, set two years after the defeat of Kid Buu, shows Tarble arriving on Earth in a very unexpected and low-key way.
Tarble isn’t a particularly memorable character, and he doesn’t even become a recurring presence on Earth. Although he’s been mentioned in *Dragon Ball Super*, confirming he’s officially part of the story, it still feels odd that Vegeta has a younger brother he largely ignores. Surprisingly, Vegeta seems to have a stronger connection with Cabba from Universe 6 than he does with his own brother, Tarble.
There’s a possible underlying tension between these two characters stemming from differing views on fighting and strength. King Vegeta exiled his son, Tarble, because Tarble lacked combat skills and wasn’t interested in fighting, a deeply shaming act for a Saiyan. Surprisingly, Tarble seems to be doing well despite being away from his home planet. While Tarble and Gure haven’t been seen recently, it’s possible they had a child together, which would make Vegeta an uncle. It would be incredibly interesting to see what a child born from a Saiyan and an alien like Gure would be like, and how powerful they might become.
Trunks Is Vegeta’s First Child & A Tremendous Warrior In His Own Right
When fans first meet Vegeta in *Dragon Ball*, he’s a cold and violent enemy. However, his time on Earth leads to more than just a change of heart and a turn towards heroism. He unexpectedly falls in love with Bulma, and they have a son named Trunks. Their relationship surprises everyone, but it blossoms into a genuinely loving and supportive partnership. Having a son gives Vegeta another chance to compete with Goku, this time as a father.
Vegeta, determined to surpass Goku and Gohan, focuses on making his son, Trunks, incredibly powerful. He’s a demanding trainer, which isn’t surprising given how he expresses affection through rigorous martial arts practice. Over time, Vegeta begins to soften and show Trunks his love, though it takes years before he actually says the words and embraces him.
Trunks is Vegeta’s son, but there’s also Future Trunks, who comes from a different timeline where his parents are Future Vegeta and Future Bulma. He spends a lot of time in the past and develops a strong connection with Vegeta. At the time, Vegeta’s actual son is still a baby, and his relationship with Future Trunks seems to help him become a better father. Since the end of the “Future” Trunks Saga in *Dragon Ball Super*, Future Trunks hasn’t appeared, having returned to his own timeline with Future Mai. It’s possible they could even start a family of their own, creating another branch in Vegeta’s family tree in a parallel world.
Bulla Is Vegeta’s Daughter & The Spitting Image Of Her Mother
When people talk about Vegeta and Bulma’s children, Trunks is usually the first name that comes up. However, they also have a younger daughter, Bulla, who doesn’t get as much attention because she’s introduced later in the story. After a ten-year time jump in the peaceful period following the Cell Saga, we learn that Bulma and Vegeta had another child. Bulla is four years old when this part of the story begins, and she’s very impressed when she sees her father fighting.
Bulla hasn’t been a major focus in the story, but she remains an important member of Vegeta’s family. *Dragon Ball Super* shows the moment Vegeta finds out Bulma is pregnant with Bulla, which takes place in the years following the defeat of Kid Buu. Interestingly, Whis subtly manipulates events to accelerate Bulma’s pregnancy, ensuring Bulla’s birth so Vegeta can compete in the Tournament of Power.
Picking up five years after the end of the peaceful era, *Dragon Ball GT* offers some fun moments, particularly with Vegeta. Instead of intensely training his daughter Bulla like he did with Trunks, Vegeta happily spends time with her, even taking her shopping. This could be because he’s become more relaxed as he’s gotten older, or because he wants Bulla to be more like her mother, leaving Trunks to follow in his footsteps.
Vegeta Jr. Carries On The Family Name As Earth’s Future Super Saiyan
While *Dragon Ball GT* definitely has its flaws, its final episode is arguably one of the best in the entire *Dragon Ball* franchise. The series ends with a satisfying and emotional goodbye as Goku and the Dragon Balls depart, and a heartwarming epilogue set a hundred years in the future. This ending beautifully reinforces the core themes of *Dragon Ball* – that heroes will always rise up to protect Earth.
The story reaches its climax at the 64th World Martial Arts Tournament, where a battle is underway between two fighters who strikingly resemble familiar faces. Both fighters achieve the Super Saiyan transformation to increase their power. While *Dragon Ball GT* offers some background on Goku Jr., explaining his lineage as Pan’s great-great-grandson, this is the only appearance of Vegeta Jr. in the series.
It’s unknown exactly how far removed Vegeta Jr. is from the original Vegeta. We only know he’s Bulma Leigh’s son, and both Bulma and Pan are watching him. It’s unclear whether Bulma and Vegeta Jr. are the children of Trunks or Bulla. Despite the lack of specific details, it’s good to see the Vegeta family still protecting Earth a hundred years after the end of *Dragon Ball GT*. While Vegeta may have lost his status as a Saiyan prince and planetary ruler, he’s created an even stronger connection with Earth and its people.
