Jack Black and Donald Glover, both beloved for their roles in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, are eager to work together again on a future project.
Anthony Black is back for the next movie based on the popular Nintendo game. This time, Bowser is trying to turn over a new leaf, but Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) are holding him captive and trying to help him change. Bowser’s son, Bowser Jr. (Benny Safdie), rescues him, and the brothers must stop them both. During their chase, they meet Yoshi (Donald Glover) in the desert town of Tosterena, who joins their effort to protect the Mushroom Kingdom.
The voice cast for The Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel is packed with talent, including Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Glen Powell as Fox McCloud, Brie Larson as Princess Rosalina, Luis Guzmán as Wart, Issa Rae as the Honey Queen, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, joining previously announced stars like Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jack Black, Charlie Day, and the Safdie brothers. The film launched with a record-breaking $34 million on its opening night and is already proving to be a box office hit, arriving in theaters on April 1st.
Before the release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Ash Crossan from ScreenRant spoke with Jack Black and Donald Glover. The conversation covered their musical backgrounds – Black’s work with Tenacious D and Glover’s as Childish Gambino – and what kind of song they’d love to perform together. They playfully called the question “a lot to unpack,” but Black jokingly volunteered himself for any vocal cameo, saying he’s a big fan of Glover’s music.
Glover playfully responded with the phrase, “Don’t threaten me with a good time,” and then suggested that his dream duet with Jack Black would be the song “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes. Black immediately started singing a portion of the song’s chorus.
Donald Glover: I just would love to hear each other [with that].
Jack Black jokingly quoted the song “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life,” singing, “I had the time of my life. And I never felt this way before…”
Donald Glover feels they are already on the right track and believes the movie has a strong ending.
Jack Black: Was that Top Gun where that first came out?
Donald Glover: No, it was Dirty Dancing
Jack Black: Yes!
Donald Glover’s Son Was The Most Surprised By His Yoshi Casting
ScreenRant asked how long the actor had kept a certain role a secret, and recounted a surprised reaction from someone who exclaimed, “You didn’t tell me you’re playing Yoshi!”
Donald Glover: Oh, my son.
ScreenRant: Really?
Donald Glover said his kids were really surprised when they found out he’d been working on the project. They kept asking why he hadn’t told them! He enjoyed their reaction and was also able to do the voice work for the project, which he thought was a special experience to share with them – something you don’t get to do often with your kids.
ScreenRant asked about creating Yoshi’s voice. They were curious how the voice actor developed the sound, noting that the games are the main reference point for what Yoshi sounds like.
Donald Glover recently spent a lot of time thinking about how to express a lighter, more playful side of himself. He wanted to explore being genuinely endearing – something he hadn’t really done before. He was inspired by his youngest son, who freely expresses his own cuteness, and decided to embrace that quality in himself. He also found inspiration in a YouTube video filled with sounds from the Yoshi video game character.
ScreenRant asked what sound effect would play when selecting me as a character in a video game, similar to how Jack Black might have a ‘Come on!’ sound. They were curious about my personal ‘cue’ or sound effect.
Jack Black: Oh, that’s a good cue!
Donald Glover: That’s not bad!
Jack Black: I was thinking it would just be like crackling lava. I’m like, “Come on!”
Donald Glover: That’s a good one.
Jack Black: I’ll take it.
Donald Glover: “Ooh.” That’s mine. That’s what I’m thinking.
ScreenRant: Elaborate or don’t not go into it.
Donald Glover: I feel like it just gets me going.
