Following the conclusion of its agreement with Disney, the BBC has announced when fans can expect the new Doctor Who spinoff, The War Between the Land and the Sea.
Following months of speculation, the BBC has announced it will continue making Doctor Who independently, without Disney’s participation. The BBC and Disney previously collaborated for two seasons of the show, featuring showrunner Russell T Davies and the Fifteenth Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa. This partnership also included the five-part Doctor Who spin-off, The War Between the Land and the Sea.
I was so excited for The War Between the Land and the Sea, and originally, we were all expecting it to come out on Disney+ everywhere, including the UK, in 2026. But now, the BBC has announced it’s actually going to premiere on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK much sooner – they’re saying sometime later this year! It’s a change of plans, but I’m happy we won’t have to wait as long.
The BBC also shared that a Christmas special of Doctor Who will air in 2026, penned by Russell T Davies, and that details about the future of the show will be announced later. It’s currently unknown if The War Between the Land and the Sea will be available on Disney+ this year.
Featuring Russell Tovey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, The War Between the Land and the Sea tells the story of a dangerous, ancient species rising from the ocean and announcing its presence to the world. This event sparks a global crisis, and UNIT, a specialized organization, must intervene as conflict erupts between the land and sea, with the fate of humanity hanging in the balance.
I’m so excited to hear that Tovey is joining the Doctor Who universe! He’s playing a character named Barclay who’s right in the middle of the action, caught between UNIT and the Sea Devils. And it’s not his first time on the show, which is awesome – he was actually in two episodes back in the late 2000s when Doctor Who was rebooted. I remember him from those!
Gugu Mbatha-Raw is joining Doctor Who as a reimagined version of the Sea Devils, a character named Salt. This isn’t her first time in the Doctor Who universe – she previously appeared as Tish Jones in 2007. The trailer for the upcoming story, ‘The War Between,’ hints at a very dramatic and politically complex battle between UNIT and Salt. You can watch the trailer below.
With UNIT back in the show, it’s great news that Jemma Redgrave – who plays Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, the head of UNIT – will be in the new miniseries. The cast also includes Alexander Devrient, Ruth Madeley, Colin McFarlane, Adrian Lukis, Patrick Baladi, Francesca Corney, Mei Mac, and Vincent Franklin.
We don’t yet have a confirmed release date for The War Between the Land and the Sea, either in the UK or internationally.
