Dr. Salvador Plasencia, a doctor who provided drugs to Matthew Perry before he died of an overdose, has been sentenced to 30 months in prison.
When the doctor received his sentence, the mother and half-sister of the Friends star were in court. Judge Sherilyn Peace Garnett sentenced him to two and a half years in prison and a $5,600 fine. Plasencia, who had previously admitted his guilt this summer, was immediately taken into custody. After completing his prison term, he will also be under supervised release for two years.
As a movie lover, I was really saddened to hear about Matthew Perry’s passing, and the details coming out are just heartbreaking. It turns out the doctor who was prescribing him ketamine actually called him a really awful name in texts to another doctor, while they were talking about the medication. It’s just… shocking. But during the hearing, the doctor did seem to feel some regret, saying he messed up and should have done more to protect Matthew. It doesn’t excuse anything, but it’s a small piece of a really tragic story.
Five people faced charges related to the death of Matthew Perry. In October 2024, Chavez confessed to distributing ketamine. Perry’s assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa, took responsibility for his part in the events in August 2024, as did Eric Fleming, who supplied the ketamine. Jasveen Sangha, also known as the “Ketamine Queen,” pleaded guilty in September 2025.
Both of Perry’s parents issued statements strongly criticizing Plasencia’s behavior and urging the judge to give him a harsh sentence. They rightfully condemned the doctor for violating his professional oath to care for patients and accused him of exploiting their son when he was at his most vulnerable.
The doctor betrayed the trust placed in him, secretly meeting with the victim multiple times. All this, for just a few thousand dollars? He preyed on our son’s weakness and even boasted about it, asking how much money he could get away with. It was a cruel and calculated act.
Matthew Perry’s parents have stated they believe the doctor failed to truly listen to their concerns and significantly contributed to their son’s death, causing immense grief to the family.
Matthew Perry, the Emmy-nominated actor best known for his role on Friends, died on October 28, 2023, at the age of 54. He was found dead at his home in Los Angeles. Reports indicate he was discovered unresponsive in a hot tub.
Following Matthew Perry’s passing, the creators of Friends, Marta Kauffman and David Crane, along with executive producer Kevin Bright, released a statement. They said, “This feels like the ultimate heartbreaking episode. We’ll always remember the happiness, energy, and incredible wit he brought to everything he did, both on and off screen. He was the funniest person in any room, but more importantly, he was kind, generous, and always thought of others.”
