Disney’s Tron: Ares Is a Bigger Streaming Hit Than Avatar

Disney’s popular sci-fi series are sparking debate online. Although the newest film is doing well in cinemas, older installments are receiving criticism on Disney+.

Despite a disappointing start in theaters on October 10th, the sci-fi film Tron: Ares is now performing surprisingly well and consistently ranks at the top of streaming charts. According to FlixPatrol, it has even surpassed both the original 2009 Avatar and its 2022 sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, keeping them from the top spot.

The new movie quickly became popular, even after a rocky start with on-demand viewing. It’s been the number one film for nearly a week, with Avatar: The Way of Water in second place and the original Avatar in third. With Avatar: Fire and Ash now showing in cinemas, many fans have been revisiting the earlier films to refresh their memories of the world of Pandora.

Disney’s Tron movies haven’t quite resonated with viewers. While the films consistently push the boundaries of visual effects, the storylines haven’t been able to capture the interest of critics or audiences.

The Tron story began in 1982 with a film that introduced Kevin Flynn, played by Jeff Bridges, a computer programmer who unexpectedly finds himself inside a digital world called The Grid. Within The Grid, computer programs have become self-aware and control everything. The first movie centers on Kevin’s attempt to escape this virtual reality.

In 2010, Disney revived the Tron series with Tron: Legacy. Jeff Bridges reprised his role as Kevin Flynn, now trapped inside the digital world of The Grid. This time, the story focused on his adult son, Sam (played by Garrett Hedlund), who received a signal from his father. Sam then embarked on a mission to rescue Kevin and prevent a dangerous program from escaping into the real world.

Tron: Ares Wasn’t the Savior of the Franchise

Tron: Ares shifted the focus from the Flynn family, making the Tron program itself the main character. The film still included elements from the original Tron movies, with ENCOM remaining a key location, now run by a new character named Eve Kim. In this installment, Eve works to stop Dillinger Systems, a company headed by Julian Dillinger—the grandson of the original ENCOM executive, Ed Dillinger.

While Jeff Bridges briefly appears as his iconic character Kevin Flynn within the digital world of The Grid, the new cast includes Jared Leto as the main character, alongside Greta Lee as Eve Kim, the current head of ENCOM. Evan Peters plays Julian Dillinger, with Jodie Turner-Smith as Athena, Gillian Anderson as Julian’s mother, Elisabeth Dillinger, Arturo Castro as Seth Flores, and Cameron Monaghan as Caius.

Critics were divided on the movie, giving it a lukewarm 53% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, audiences loved it, awarding it a high score of 84% – the best yet for this film.

Even though audiences liked the sci-fi movie, it didn’t do well in theaters. With a budget of $180 million, the film only earned $142.2 million worldwide, meaning it didn’t break even and ultimately lost money, according to The Numbers.

Tron: Ares is available to stream on Disney+. Avatar: Fire and Ash is currently playing in theaters.
