Disney has earned major streaming success on a free-to-use service.
Disney’s recent sci-fi revival of a beloved, decades-old franchise has become a hit on a free streaming platform. While Disney primarily releases content on Disney+ and Hulu, they also occasionally share their movies with other services, including free options like Tubi.
Currently, Prey is a big hit on Tubi’s list of the most popular movies in the U.S. This 2022 film, directed by Dan Trachtenberg, is actually a prequel to the Predator series. It stars Amber Midthunder as Naru, a skilled Comanche warrior who encounters a dangerous alien hunter – a Yautja – while hunting in the Great Plains back in 1719.
Hulu saw huge success with the movie Prey. Critics loved it, giving it a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and viewers flocked to watch it on the platform. Prey quickly became Hulu’s most-watched title in the US, and the most-watched movie release in the country at the time.
The movie Prey successfully brought new life to the Predator series after the 2018 film The Predator received negative reviews, leading to more installments. Director Trachtenberg went on to create two additional films, the first of which, the animated Predator: Killer of Killers, released in 2025 to positive reviews and strong viewership on Hulu.
Next came Predator: Badlands, the first Predator movie released in theaters in seven years. Critics liked the film, and it earned a respectable $184.6 million worldwide on a $105 million budget. It also performed well as a digital rental, reaching the top spot on several streaming platforms.
It’s currently unknown if another Predator Badlands film will be made, but a sequel to Prey has been considered. Amber Midthunder mentioned in a 2023 interview that discussions were happening about her possibly reprising her role. As of now, though, no sequel has been officially approved. Despite this, the positive reception to Prey and the previous films suggest there’s potential for more stories in the Predator universe.
Now that Prey is available on Tubi, it’s expected to remain popular and reach a large audience, even without being exclusive to Hulu. The film represents a significant shift for the Predator series, as Disney is actively leveraging its ownership, which should help maintain the franchise’s success for the foreseeable future.
