The streaming hit Avatar: Fire and Ash has been overtaken. A new show from Disney is now the most popular one.
According to data from FlixPatrol, Descendants: Wicked Wonderland is currently the most popular movie on Disney+ worldwide, as of July 19. The film has reached number one in 71 countries, including the US, UK, and Canada. Wicked Wonderland first aired on Disney Channel on July 16th and became available on Disney+ the next day, quickly becoming the top choice and surpassing other popular titles.

The latest Descendants movie brings back Kylie Cantrall as Red, the Queen of Hearts’ daughter, and Malia Baker as Chloe Charming, Cinderella’s daughter. Wicked Wonderland follows these two daughters of Disney characters as they embark on a new adventure after their time-traveling experiences in the previous film.
The movie hints at trouble for Red and Chloe after their time-traveling adventures. While they think everything is great now that they’ve fixed things for the Queen of Hearts and Cinderella, they’ve actually created a new enemy named Maddox Hatter by altering the past.
The main villain is the son of the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland, and Leonardo Nam (known for Westworld and The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift) will reprise the role. The cast also includes Liamani Segura as Pink (Red’s younger sister), Brendon Trembaly as Max (Maddox’s son), Kiara Romero as Hazel Hook (daughter of the famous Peter Pan villain Captain Hook), and Alexandro Byrd as Luis Madrigal.
In the upcoming movie, Maddox Hater has a bigger part to play. The story centers around rescuing the Queen of Hearts after Maddox captures her. To do so, Red and Chloe team up with Pink—Red’s sister—along with Luis, Luisa Madrigal’s son, and Max, Maddox’s son, in an effort to save both the Queen and Wonderland.
Although the new film managed to beat Avatar: Fire and Ash in popularity, fan reactions have been somewhat mixed. It currently has a 68% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on over 100 user reviews – an improvement compared to the 43% audience score of The Rise of Red, but not as high as some other films.
I’ve been following this series from the beginning, and I thought Descendants 5 was really great – a definite improvement! Most fans seem to love the music, although a few felt it wasn’t essential to the story. The time travel stuff did get a little confusing at times, and some people had trouble with plot holes because of it. One person who also loves the series wrote in their review that it’s an impressive step forward, and I totally agree!
Disney’s Descendants Continues to be a Massive Hit for the Streamer
The Descendants series started over ten years ago, with the first movie released in 2015. It created a whole new world centered around the teenage children of famous Disney villains, who were all living on the Isle of the Lost. The original films featured Dove Cameron, Cameron Boyce, Sofia Carson, and Boooboo Stewart.
The Descendants series became increasingly popular, adding new characters along the way. The fourth movie, Descendants: The Rise of Red, served as a spin-off introducing actors Cantrall and Baker to the cast. Thanks to its many familiar Disney faces and memorable music, the franchise has been very successful for Disney. The first three movies have already been watched for over 781 million hours, and the newest film is expected to add even more to that impressive total.
