They seem to be learning from both the successes of franchises like Game of Thrones and the pitfalls of others, aiming for that sweet spot. Look, fantasy is huge on TV right now, and adaptations of popular books often deliver. Combine that with dragons – and let’s be real, everyone loves a good dragon – and Eragon feels like a pretty safe bet. I absolutely loved getting into Christopher Paolini’s Inheritance Cycle! It all starts with Eragon, where this fifteen-year-old farm boy, Eragon, finds a dragon egg, and it hatches! He and the dragon, Saphira, become bonded, making him the first Dragon Rider in ages. Of course, that puts him right in the crosshairs of the evil King Galbatorix, and suddenly Eragon’s thrown into this incredible adventure across a huge fantasy world. It’s a really captivating story!

The Eragon series is now actively in development, with writers recently beginning work on the show, and Christopher Paolini, the original author, contributing as well. While it will probably be a few years before it appears on Disney+, the show promises to be excellent. It aims to capture the magic of popular dragon-themed stories like HBO’s House of the Dragon and DreamWorks’ How to Train Your Dragon.

Game of Thrones changed fantasy television, and its prequel, House of the Dragon, has continued that success. While it likely won’t be as violent as House of the Dragon, that’s not necessarily a drawback. The Eragon series blends complex political storylines with classic coming-of-age themes – exploring things like losing innocence, the responsibilities that come with power, and the journey to find out who you are.

The upcoming Eragon series will share similarities with DreamWorks’ How to Train Your Dragon, as it’s another story about people who ride dragons. While it’s very different from House of the Dragon, it consistently delivers exciting and imaginative adventures.

The How to Train Your Dragon movies are wonderfully uplifting and make you feel like you’re flying with the characters.
