Following its time in theaters, The Mandalorian and Grogu—a Star Wars show that sparked some debate—is now gaining popularity again on Disney+.
Since launching in November 2019 with The Mandalorian, Disney+ has released a variety of live-action and animated Star Wars series. These include shows like Andor, Maul — Shadow Lord, Skeleton Crew, The Acolyte, Ahsoka, Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Bad Batch, The Book of Boba Fett, and Visions. Some series, like Andor and Maul — Shadow Lord, have been highly praised, while others, such as The Acolyte and Obi-Wan Kenobi, have received mixed reactions from viewers.
The series The Book of Boba Fett, which sparked a lot of debate when it first came out, is now available again on Disney+. It follows Boba Fett, a character first seen in the original Star Wars trilogy, as he tries to become a respected crime boss. The show was set up in season 2 of The Mandalorian and explores his present-day life alongside flashbacks to what happened after Return of the Jedi. However, it faced criticism for its portrayal of Boba Fett (played by Temuera Morrison) and for dedicating two episodes to the characters Din Djarin and Grogu instead of focusing on the main character.
After episodes of The Mandalorian and Grogu appeared in movie theaters on May 22nd, The Book of Boba Fett has landed at number eight on Disney+’s most-watched list in the U.S. It’s currently behind Maul — Shadow Lord, The Mandalorian, Daredevil: Born Again, Secrets of the Bees, Escape from a House of Horror – A Diane Sawyer Special Event, Zootopia+, and Perfect Crown, but is performing better than both The Punisher and As Told by Emoji.
You don’t need to watch The Book of Boba Fett before The Mandalorian and Grogu, but it does offer helpful background information, likely contributing to its continued popularity on streaming services years after its release. The show’s shift in focus to Din and Grogu, and their eventual spinoff, was debated by fans, but it’s an important piece of their story, showing what they experienced while separated and how they eventually reunited.
As a fan, I was really excited to see the Hutt Twins show up in The Book of Boba Fett! They’re major villains from The Mandalorian and Grogu, and they come to Tatooine looking to take over Jabba’s old territory from Boba. While you can still follow what’s happening with them in the show even if you haven’t seen those earlier episodes, it definitely adds another layer to understand why they’re after Jabba’s son, Rotta the Hutt – played by Jeremy Allen White, by the way – and what their overall plan is.
Despite receiving mixed reviews – a 66% score from critics and 48% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes – The Book of Boba Fett shows that there’s still strong interest in the Star Wars universe. This is particularly true when it comes to the story of Din and Grogu, and how it connects to the broader Star Wars storyline. While not considered one of the best shows in the franchise, its popularity on streaming demonstrates continued fan engagement.
