One of Disney’s biggest box office failures of 2025 is finding redemption on streaming.

Disney’s 2025 box office results were uneven. While three of their films each earned over $1 billion, the remakes of Snow White and Tron: Ares didn’t perform well with audiences. The year ended particularly poorly with Ella McCay, a film directed by the renowned James L. Brooks, earning only $4.56 million despite costing $35 million to make.

The political comedy-drama is now available on Hulu and is already proving popular with viewers. It quickly rose to the number 2 spot on the movie charts, just behind Django Unchained, and currently sits at number 11 overall when including both movies and TV shows. Since it was added to Hulu only yesterday, experts predict its popularity will continue to grow.

Ella McCay is a political drama centered around a dedicated woman who unexpectedly becomes governor. As she navigates her new role, she faces both political obstacles and family issues, all while working to pass laws that support mothers and children. The series stars Emma Mackey, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Woody Harrelson.

I was really excited for Ella McCay, but sadly, the critics weren’t kind. They found the story messy, the direction uninspired, and the whole idea just… odd. It ended up with a really low score – only 23% – on Rotten Tomatoes. While regular moviegoers were a little more forgiving, giving it a 57% on the Popcornmeter, that negative buzz definitely seemed to hurt how well it did in theaters. It’s a shame, because I was hoping for so much more!

Although the movie Ella McCay was promoted using the popular internet meme challenge, the marketing efforts weren’t very successful. It opened in the US with $4 million but experienced significant declines in ticket sales each following week, with drops exceeding 70%. The film also failed to gain traction internationally, and its release in France was even cancelled.
