Disney+ Sets Unfortunate Record With 2026 Star Wars Slate

Ever since Disney+ debuted in 2019, Star Wars content has been a significant part of their offerings, with The Mandalorian being one of the initial shows launched. Since then, Lucasfilm has continued to deliver various Star Wars TV series to Disney+. Unfortunately, the current lineup of Star Wars streaming series for Disney+ falls short in comparison to previous studio records.

Currently, Disney+ has only one live-action Star Wars television series in active development – “Ahsoka” Season 2. This is a change from the initial lineup after Disney+’s launch in 2019, which included both “Andor” and “Obi-Wan Kenobi” beyond “The Mandalorian.” Since then, Disney+ has consistently developed Star Wars projects, with two more seasons of “The Mandalorian,” the first season of “Ahsoka,” “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew,” “Andor” Season 2, “The Book of Boba Fett,” and “The Acolyte.”

As a devoted Star Wars enthusiast, I must admit that the current state of our beloved universe on Disney+ feels somewhat sparse. With Andor wrapping up in Season 2, The Mandalorian moving to the big screen under the title The Mandalorian & Grogu>, and no renewals announced for shows like Skeleton Crew, The Book of Boba Fett, or The Acolyte, it’s hard not to notice the gap. Fortunately, we have Ahsoka Season 2 on the horizon, with production already underway, but beyond that, it’s uncertain what the future holds for Disney+’s Star Wars TV lineup.

The metric being discussed excludes the numerous animated Star Wars series available on Disney+, such as “Star Wars: Visions,” “Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld,” and “Maul – Shadow Lord.

Although Disney held a special Star Wars Celebration in Japan earlier this year, they failed to unveil any plans for a new live-action Star Wars series. Instead, they chose to emphasize their cinematic lineup and projects such as the already-confirmed second season of Ahsoka.

What is the Future of Star Wars’ Live-Action TV Slate?

In the absence of any official announcements from Disney and Lucasfilm about the future direction of Star Wars’ live-action series on Disney+, there’s a sense of uncertainty regarding stories set in the galaxy far, far away. Nevertheless, whispers and speculations continue to circulate about potential projects that could be under development.

It’s now being speculated that a live-action Star Wars series, specifically “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” might not have been permanently canceled after all. Reports indicate that Disney+ is currently working on a second season for this show, which would further explore Ewan McGregor’s character as the Jedi master following the events of “Revenge of the Sith” and before “A New Hope.” The initial plan was to air it as a limited series, but given its popularity, another season could be beneficial and a successful move for the studio.

It’s uncertain whether “The Mandalorian” will come back for a fourth season following the 2026 release of the movie “The Mandalorian & Grogu” on the big screen. Given the immense success of “The Mandalorian” as one of Disney+’s top Star Wars shows, if the film receives positive feedback, it might inspire the studio to reinvest that popularity into its streaming content.

According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter earlier this year, Carlton Cuse, the showrunner of “Lost,” and his son Nick Cuse are working on a new Star Wars series that has been announced. While specific details about the series remain under wraps, it’s clear that Lucasfilm is actively developing new TV projects in the Star Wars universe, so fans can expect more exciting content after the release of “Ahsoka” Season 2.
