The Disney+ series, Percy Jackson & The Olympians, has quickly become a hit, offering hope for other upcoming adaptations of popular young adult fantasy novels. Historically, these types of books haven’t always translated well to the big screen.
Many book-to-screen adaptations haven’t gone well. While the A Series of Unfortunate Events movie wasn’t successful, the Netflix series was a big improvement. Artemis Fowl didn’t work at all, and The Golden Compass left out the most important elements of the story. The adaptations of The Mortal Instruments and Vampire Academy were also disappointing.
Despite some book adaptations failing, there’s still reason for optimism. While the Percy Jackson movies weren’t well-received, Disney+ revived the series with a fresh start as a TV show. The new adaptation, Percy Jackson & The Olympians, has proven successful, offering hope for future remakes of beloved fantasy stories.
Percy Jackson’s Success Is A Great Sign For Disney+’s Eragon TV Show
Disney+ announced a TV series based on Christopher Paolini’s popular fantasy novel, Eragon, in 2022. Eragon was first published just two years before The Lightning Thief, and both books quickly became worldwide hits. The success of Disney+’s Percy Jackson & The Olympians is therefore very encouraging.
Both the movies based on Percy Jackson and Eragon were considered failures and disappointed fans and critics. It’s rare for both groups to feel the same way, which highlights how badly those films were received. Fortunately, Disney+ recently created a successful TV series based on Percy Jackson. The first two seasons have been very well-received, and two more are already planned.
The new Percy Jackson series is succeeding thanks to its excellent production quality, talented actors, realistic special effects, and commitment to staying true to the book. Plus, author Rick Riordan was heavily involved in making the show a reality.
A new Eragon TV show on Disney+ has the potential to be very successful, especially with author Christopher Paolini helping to create it. If Disney+ dedicates the necessary effort to stay true to the original story, it could be a major hit.
Disney+’s Eragon TV Show Will Need A Long Run Like Percy Jackson & The Olympians
The Percy Jackson & The Olympians series has five books, excluding the follow-up books. The television adaptation on Disney+ is planning to cover one book each season. Disney+ seems committed to investing in this young adult story and is willing to renew it for future seasons early on, which is important because the characters are young and will continue to grow.
If the Eragon series mirrors the success of Percy Jackson, it will likely require four seasons. While Eragon is a bit older than Percy Jackson was when the series began, he’s still a teenager, so filming multiple seasons in a short period will be important to avoid noticeable changes in his appearance. Given the positive reception of Percy Jackson & The Olympians, Disney+ may be willing to give Eragon a chance.
Eragon Will Face Steeper Competition Than Percy Jackson & The Olympians

Disney+’s upcoming Eragon series might face slightly more competition than Percy Jackson & The Olympians did, simply because there are fewer shows based on Greek mythology already available compared to other fantasy genres.
When the Eragon series is released, it will face competition from several other dragon-themed shows, including Fourth Wing, Wings of Fire, and House of the Dragon. Fortunately, two of those competing shows are aimed at adult audiences, which gives Eragon a good chance of finding its own audience and succeeding.
