Disney+’s 8-Part Action Fantasy Series Is Aging Like Fine Wine

The Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again has been a particularly big hit for Marvel fans. Charlie Cox’s return as Matt Murdock felt like a welcome change, bringing back the realistic, character-focused storytelling that many had been wanting. Importantly, it also showed Disney was willing to include the previous Marvel shows from Netflix. This has sparked renewed interest in the team-up series, The Defenders.

Released in 2017, The Defenders was a team-up series on Netflix that combined the storylines of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. The eight-episode show brought these street-level heroes together to fight a dangerous, centuries-old criminal organization called the Hand, who were searching for a way to become immortal.

When The Defenders first came out, it didn’t impress many fans or Marvel itself. But over time, people’s opinions have changed. What originally seemed disappointing now feels like a welcome change of pace compared to the ever-growing scope of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And with so many Marvel shows now available on Disney+, its significance is even more apparent.

The Defenders Are Finally Getting Some Love In The MCU

A Street-Level Team The MCU Now Needs More Than Ever

When The Defenders debuted in 2017, it faced high expectations. After the popular and well-received shows Daredevil and Jessica Jones, viewers hoped for a team-up event similar to The Avengers. However, the show received a mixed response. While the cast had good chemistry, the plot and speed of the story didn’t quite live up to the excitement.

When The Defenders first came out, it felt like the show just… didn’t land with most people. Honestly, I wasn’t shocked when it didn’t get a second season. But looking back now, I think we were all judging it by the wrong standards. It wasn’t trying to be another huge, explosive Marvel team-up. Instead, it really focused on the gritty, street-level stuff – smaller, more personal stories, and heroes who weren’t exactly squeaky clean, all set in a very realistic version of New York City.

That idea seems especially important now. Most of the current superhero teams in the Marvel Cinematic Universe focus on huge, universe-level conflicts or worldwide dangers. Groups like the Guardians of the Galaxy, Fantastic Four, Avengers, Thunderbolts, and even the X-Men are all about tackling these massive threats. What’s missing is a team dedicated to helping everyday people with more common, local problems.

Unlike many Marvel stories focused on cosmic threats, The Defenders feels grounded and important because it shows heroes fighting street-level crime and dealing with the real, immediate impact on people’s lives. It offers a refreshing focus on human consequences that’s been missing from much of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Looking back, The Defenders might have been ahead of its time. When it first came out, before the Marvel Cinematic Universe was so vast, its realistic style felt restrictive. Now, it feels exactly what audiences want. People are hungry for smaller, more personal stories, and the idea of a team of heroes working on a more local level, separate from the Avengers, is very appealing.

The recent success of Daredevil: Born Again is further changing how people view older Marvel shows. Instead of being seen as a failed experiment, The Defenders is now recognized as an important stepping stone, laying the groundwork for the darker, more complex side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that was ahead of its time.

Daredevil: Born Again Sets Up The Return Of The Defenders

Marvel Is Quietly Rebuilding The World Of The Netflix Era

I’m really excited watching Daredevil: Born Again, and it feels like they’re building towards something even more massive! The biggest thing for me is knowing Jessica Jones is coming back – even though we haven’t seen her on screen yet, it’s a huge deal!

As Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) gains more control over New York and targets those who fight crime outside the law, it makes sense that Jessica Jones would come back into action. Like Daredevil, she can’t ignore the suffering of innocent people. The story has built their eventual team-up in a way that feels organic, particularly with the threat of the AVTF pursuing them both.

Disney isn’t stopping with Jessica Jones’ return in Daredevil: Born Again season 2. Photos from the set of season 3 show that Luke Cage, played by Mike Colter, and Iron Fist, played by Finn Jones, will also be appearing. This is a strong sign that Marvel and Disney are fully bringing back characters from the old Netflix Marvel shows and integrating them into the main Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The possibility of revisiting The Defenders is particularly thrilling because a new adaptation on Disney+ could be much better integrated into the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe. Unlike the previous Netflix series, which felt separate, this version could see these characters actively impacting and being impacted by the main MCU storyline.

This change would fix a major problem with the original Defenders series. Although it was officially part of the Marvel universe, it often felt separate from the main storyline. A revival like Born Again on Disney+, following the many other Marvel shows released since then, would bridge that gap and allow the Defenders to connect with the larger MCU in a more significant way.

Most importantly, giving these characters the attention they deserve would be fantastic. Charlie Cox has already shown he can lead another successful Disney+ series as Daredevil. Bringing back Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist would complete the team and give fans the crossover they’ve been hoping for. While The Defenders felt a little early back in 2017, its return after season 3 of Daredevil: Born Again could be the perfect time for it to really succeed.
