Disney+ Moves Ahead With New Fantasy Book Show After Percy Jackson

Following the success of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Disney+ is moving forward with another fantasy series. They’ve announced the team who will be bringing Christopher Paolini’s popular book series, The Inheritance Cycle, to life in a live-action format.

Disney+ unveils creative team behind Eragon

Disney+ has announced the main creative team behind its upcoming live-action series, Eragon, which is based on Christopher Paolini’s popular Inheritance Cycle books (according to Deadline).

Todd Harthan will develop the series with Christopher Paolini, and they will both lead the creative direction. Marc Webb is an executive producer on the project, and the writing team started working on it in late 2023.

The series is produced by 20th Television, which also supports ABC’s ‘High Potential’ and has a deal with Todd Harthan. Bert Salke of Co-Lab 21 is an executive producer, having secured the rights to the book series in 2022. Rachel Moore, Christopher Paolini, Harthan, and Todd Helbing are also executive producers on the project.

Eragon is the story of a young boy who unexpectedly becomes a Dragon Rider – the first in over a hundred years. With his dragon, Saphira, he discovers ancient magic and fights against a cruel king. Originally published in 2002, the book was a bestseller for over two years, appearing on The New York Times Children’s Books Best Seller list for 121 weeks. It has since been published in over 50 countries and has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide.

The first movie version of the story came out in 2006, produced by 20th Century Fox, and starred Edward Speleers, Jeremy Irons, and John Malkovich. While it made $250 million globally, critics generally didn’t like it, and no follow-up movies were made.

Todd Harthan is the creator of Rosewood and an executive producer on shows like The Company You Keep and The Resident. He’s currently producing a movie called Rule of Three, which he co-wrote with James Roday Rodriguez. Todd Helbing co-created Superman & Lois and has also worked on popular series including The Flash, Smallville, and Black Sails. Marc Webb is known for directing The Amazing Spider-Man movies and the TV show Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.

Christopher Paolini is famous for writing the bestselling Eragon series, which earned him a Guinness World Record as the youngest author to achieve that success. He’s also the author of To Sleep in a Sea of Stars and is represented by leading literary agencies WME, Writers House, and Weintraub Tobin.
