Disney Lorcana: Whispers In The Well Starter Decks & Illumineer’s Trove Review

The next set of Disney Lorcana cards, called Whispers In The Well, will be available starting November 7, 2025, with most major stores receiving their shipments on November 14. Along with the usual Starter Decks and Illumineer’s Trove, this set includes items like playmats and introduces a new game mechanic called the Boost ability.

The latest sets of starter decks for Disney Lorcana: Whispers In The Well come in Amber/Emerald and Sapphire/Steel combinations. These decks include beloved Disney characters such as Simba (from The Lion King), Megara (Hercules), Judy Hopps (Zootopia), and Robin Hood. You’ll also find returning characters like Scrooge McDuck and Daisy, plus popular favorites like Genie (Aladdin) and Nick Wilde (Zootopia).

What’s Included In Whispers In The Well’s Starter Decks

Everything You’ll Need To Get Started

Each Starter Deck comes with a fully playable 60-card deck and a booster pack containing 12 extra cards. If you’re just starting out with Disney Lorcana, either the Amber/Emerald or Sapphire/Steel deck is a fantastic way to learn the game. They each offer unique ways to play, and they’re designed to be good matches against each other if you have a friend to play with.

The following items are found within the boxes for the Whispers In The Well Starter Decks:

  • 1 booster pack, featuring 12 randomized cards
  • 1 paper playmat
  • 1 paper tracker token
  • 1 booklet of game rules
  • 11 paper damage counters
  • 1 single-player deck of 60 cards, including 2 foils

Here’s what you need to begin playing Disney Lorcana. The Illumineer’s Trove is mostly for collectors, but the Starter Decks are designed to teach you how the trading card game works – including how the new cards, glimmers, and abilities function as they become part of the game.

Whispers In The Well Amber/Emerald Starter Deck Overview

Card Highlights Include Simba & Megara

The Amber/Emerald Starter Deck for Whispers In The Well features shiny versions of the cards “Simba, King in the Making” and “Megara, Secret Keeper.” These cards introduce a new game element called Boost, so you’ll have something fresh to learn as soon as you start playing. Plus, both characters are part of a new type called “Whispers,” which are summoned using pages from damaged lorebooks.

This deck centers around the idea of paranormal abilities, so you’ll find lots of spirit-based cards. As someone who loves the movie The Black Cauldron, I was thrilled to see characters like Princess Eilonwy included. In terms of gameplay, this Amber/Emerald deck is well-rounded and introduces players to key game mechanics like Boost and Whispers.

The Amber/Emerald Starter Deck is more focused on attacking than the other option. I particularly liked the “Simba, King in the Making” card because of its strong stats. While it performed well against the Sapphire/Steel deck from Whispers In The Well, it might have an advantage over older decks that don’t have the newest abilities and card types found in Lorcana.

Whispers In The Well Sapphire/Steel Starter Deck Overview

Highlighted Cards Like Robin Hood & Judy Hopps

The Sapphire/Steel Starter Deck for Whispers in the Well comes with shiny versions of the “Judy Hopps, Uncovering Clues” and “Robin Hood, Ephemeral Archer” cards. While neither of these cards feels quite as strong as the “Simba, King in the Making” card, Robin Hood has a special ability called Expert Shot that can quickly deal damage to two of your opponent’s cards, making it a valuable asset.

This deck focuses on Detective cards, and Judy Hopps is a key part of it. Her ability, “Thorough Investigation,” lets you search the top three cards of the deck and add a Detective card to your hand. Since most cards in this set involve using Detectives to build up Lore and attack your opponent, this ability can be very useful.

The Sapphire/Steel deck in Whispers In The Well is powerful, but it takes some experience to play well, so it might not be the best choice for new players. It felt like a slow start for me – I eventually built up Lore quickly, but only after getting the right card combinations, and a little luck was involved too.

Whispers In The Well Illumineer’s Trove Overview

What’s Included & How It Compares To Past Troves

For those who enjoy collecting, the Illumineer’s Trove is available for Whispers In The Well. Starter Decks are a great way to learn the Trading Card Game, but the Trove focuses on collecting booster packs and premium organizational items. It includes:

  • 1 Lore counter
  • 6 card dividers
  • 6 damage-counter dice
  • 8 booster packs (each with 12 randomized cards inside)
  • 1 storage box

Like other Illumineer’s Troves, this storage box is perfect for keeping your cards organized, and the dividers make it easy to sort them by ink type. The lore counter dice are a good investment if you play frequently. This time, I didn’t pull any Enchanted cards from my booster packs, but I was happy to find some Gargoyles cards, as I’m excited about that new addition to Disney Lorcana.

Whether you’re a newcomer or already enjoy Disney Lorcana, the Starter Decks and Illumineer’s Trove are excellent starting points for exploring the Whispers In The Well set. The new ‘Boost’ feature and ‘Whispers’ cards add some exciting elements, and it’s encouraging to see the game continuing to evolve and gain popularity.
