The future of Doctor Who is now clear after Ncuti Gatwa’s time as the Doctor ended. In the season 15 finale, as the Doctor regenerated, viewers were shocked to see Billie Piper, who played Rose Tyler, unexpectedly appear as the new Time Lord.
The BBC has announced that its partnership with Disney+ for Doctor Who has ended after two seasons. While the show is taking a break, it will return for a Christmas special in 2026. Russell T. Davies will write the special, but it’s currently unknown if he’ll continue as the show’s lead producer for future seasons.
Lindsay Salt, BBC Director of Drama, announced the end of their collaboration with Disney+ and expressed gratitude for their partnership over the past two seasons, including the upcoming series, The War Between the Land and the Sea. She also affirmed the BBC’s continued dedication to Doctor Who, which remains a highly popular show.
Salt expressed excitement that Russell T Davies will be writing another special Christmas episode for 2026. She also reassured fans that the Doctor will continue to be a part of the BBC, and that plans for the next series, keeping the TARDIS central to the programming, will be announced soon.
According to a recent report in Deadline about the show’s initial production, each episode of the series cost around $13.3 million, thanks to Disney’s funding. However, despite the increased budget, viewership didn’t meet the BBC’s expectations. The future of the sci-fi show has been uncertain, especially with the mixed reactions to its latest season following the return of its creator.
Piper’s unexpected appearance has created a lot of speculation, as viewers aren’t sure if she’s playing the Sixteenth Doctor or a different character entirely. The end credits simply introduced Billie Piper, without specifying who she played.
Rose Tyler revealed to ScreenRant on September 8, 2025, that her return to Doctor Who came together very quickly. She explained that she received a last-minute call to film in secret, and she wasn’t allowed to tell anyone – even her closest family and friends – about it.
Doctor Who returns for Christmas in 2026.
