Disney Hit With More Bad News After Jimmy Kimmel Backlash

As a huge fan of late-night talk shows, I was really surprised when Jimmy Kimmel was suddenly taken off the air. It all started after his monologue on September 15th, where he talked about the guy accused of attacking Charlie Kirk. That segment quickly blew up online, and within two days, Disney had suspended his show. While a short break didn’t seem like a big deal at the time, it looks like it actually hurt Disney’s streaming services quite a bit. It’s pretty clear that a lot of people tune in specifically for Jimmy, and his absence had a noticeable impact on subscriber numbers.

According to data from Antenna, both Disney+ and Hulu experienced more cancellations in September. Disney+ saw its churn rate double, jumping from 4% in August to 8% in September. Hulu also saw a significant increase, with cancellations rising from 5% to 10% over the same period.

Disney+ and Hulu both experienced a sudden jump in cancellations – their churn rates doubled in just one month. This increase seems to be directly linked to viewers canceling their subscriptions after Jimmy Kimmel‘s show was removed. Normally, streaming services see fairly stable cancellation rates from month to month.

Jimmy Kimmel Cancellation Impacts Disney+ and Hulu Subscribers

Disney+ and Hulu experienced bigger increases in subscriber cancellations between August and September than other streaming services. According to data from Antenna, Apple TV+ saw its cancellation rate rise from 6% to 7%, HBO Max went from 7% to 9%, and Paramount+ increased from 6% to 7%.

Both Netflix and Peacock maintained their subscriber churn rates from August to September. Netflix continued to lose 2% of its subscribers, while Peacock’s churn rate remained at 8%.

Okay, so things are getting a little frustrating as a Disney+ and Hulu fan. First, there was all the drama with Jimmy Kimmel, and now, on top of that, Disney just announced they’re raising prices! It’s happening here in the US, and the new, higher cost will kick in on October 21st. Honestly, it feels like a double whammy right now.

Jimmy Kimmel appeared on Stephen Colbert’s show to talk about being temporarily taken off the air. He described the experience as incredibly stressful, admitting he worried his show might be canceled. When he returned to *Jimmy Kimmel Live!*, a record number of people – 6.26 million – watched on traditional TV, according to Nielsen ratings.

Jimmy Kimmel Live! airs weeknights on ABC.
