is adapting a critically acclaimed but often overlooked horror comic into a television series.
According to reports, Disney+ is creating a new series based on the popular comic book *Afterlife With Archie*. The show has been ordered straight to series, meaning that if it’s approved, more than just a single introductory episode will be made. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the writer of the original *Afterlife With Archie* comic, is writing the series. He’s also known for his work on *Chilling Adventures of Sabrina* and *Riverdale*, having created both the comics and the *Sabrina* Netflix series, and created and showrun *Riverdale* for The CW.
Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is working again with Greg Berlanti, the producer behind shows like Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, on a new series called Afterlife with Archie. This partnership is exciting for fans, given their successful collaborations in the past. Aguirre-Sacasa will also be an executive producer through his company, Muckle Man Productions, alongside Jimmy Gibbons. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman will executive produce for Berlanti Productions, and Jon Goldwater will represent Archie Comics Studios as an executive producer.
So, back in 2013, I started reading this awesome comic series by Aguirre-Sacasa and Francavilla that lasted ten issues. It actually started as a single idea for an issue of *Life with Archie* – a post-apocalyptic take on Riverdale! It was a huge deal for Archie Comics, being their first comic released directly to comic shops and it kicked off their whole horror line, Archie Horror. That line went on to include stuff like *Chilling Adventures of Sabrina*, *Jughead: The Hunger*, *Vampironica*, and *Blossoms 666*, which I also checked out!
The Legacy of Afterlife with Archie, Explained
As a huge fan, I always thought *Afterlife with Archie* was special – it wasn’t just getting amazing reviews, it really changed things for Archie Comics and paved the way for shows like *Riverdale* and *Chilling Adventures of Sabrina*. Looking back, *Riverdale* became this huge, sprawling soap opera that went on for seven seasons and 137 episodes! *Sabrina*, though, was a bit more focused, telling its story across just two seasons and 36 episodes. It was cool seeing Lucy Hale as the lead in *Riverdale* alongside Ashleigh Murray as Josie McCoy from Josie and the Pussycats, but sometimes *Riverdale* felt a little…all over the place, honestly.
