Disney Breaks MCU’s 14-Year Winning Formula With Avengers: Doomsday Trailer Plan

I’m really excited about the new Avengers: Doomsday trailer, but it feels like things are different at Marvel now. It’s been six years since the huge success of Avengers: Endgame, which wrapped up the Infinity Saga. Since then, it’s been clear that Kevin Feige and everyone at Marvel Studios have been working to build towards something new – the Multiverse Saga – and honestly, the buzz around this trailer feels… different than previous releases. It almost feels like they’re breaking their own streak of always hitting it out of the park, which shows just how much the franchise has evolved.

Compared to the Infinity Saga, the current Multiverse Saga is moving at a faster pace. Because it’s building to a big finale through both movies and TV shows, the MCU has more storylines to manage. Plus, the ideas behind the Multiverse Saga are more complex and feel less stable than what came before.

Despite everything else happening, excitement for Avengers: Doomsday is building, and it will likely increase as Disney starts promoting the movie. However, Disney is handling the first trailer release differently than they have with past Marvel Cinematic Universe films.

Disney Attaches The First Avengers: Doomsday Trailer To Avatar: Fire and Ash

The first trailer for Avengers: Doomsday will be shown in theaters before Avatar: Fire and Ash premieres on December 19th. This is the first look at footage from the movie, directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, since they finished the Infinity Saga. Originally planned for release in May 2025, Avengers: Doomsday was delayed first to May 2026, and then to December 2026. If the December date holds, Disney is beginning to promote the film a year in advance.

In addition to these changes, Disney is also switching up how it releases trailers for Avengers movies. Since the first Avengers film in 2012, they’ve always made the initial trailers available directly to the public – either through TV appearances or by posting them online. For example, the first trailer for Avengers: Infinity War premiered with the Russo brothers on Good Morning America, and the Endgame trailer was simply released online. This meant fans could see the trailers without having to go to another movie. Now, Disney is attaching the first look at Avengers: Doomsday to the premiere of a major blockbuster, meaning audiences will have to see another film first to view the trailer.

Why Disney Is Changing Avengers’ Trailer Release Approach For Doomsday

Since the conclusion of the Infinity Saga, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has faced a lot of challenges. The Multiverse Saga hasn’t gone as planned, with issues ranging from controversies and disappointing projects to changes in key personnel. This might be why Marvel is starting to promote Avengers: Doomsday so early. One possible strategy is to release the first trailer with Avatar: Fire and Ash, hoping to draw more moviegoers to see James Cameron’s latest film.

Avatar: The Way of Water earned $684.1 million domestically (in the US and Canada) and a massive $2.32 billion worldwide, which is a great result, particularly considering the challenges of the post-pandemic movie landscape. Because of this success, Disney could easily attract even more viewers to the sequel by releasing a trailer for the new Avengers movie, currently titled Avengers: Doomsday. Even with some recent issues in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Multiverse Saga, the franchise remains incredibly popular, and the announcement of the upcoming film has already generated a lot of buzz.
