In the beginning of August, Disney revealed that Hulu won’t be around much longer. Following over two decades of operation, the company-often called the House of Mouse-is officially ending the streaming service following the completion of their merger.
According to reports, Disney is moving ahead with plans to discontinue the standalone Hulu app and streaming service. However, the Hulu name will live on with a refresh. Beginning October 8th, Hulu will serve as Disney+’s hub for general entertainment content in countries outside of the U.S., effectively taking over the role currently held by the Star brand.
Disney is also planning to eventually retire Hulu as a separate service and aims to have it completely combined into the Disney+ app by 2026, offering a “fully integrated unified app experience”. The company stated on Thursday that Disney+ subscribers “will begin to see further integrations of Hulu across the Disney+ app” as part of continuous updates to the app’s homepage and other areas.
