Growing up in the ’90s, I’ve been a fan of Walt Disney Animation almost since my birth. Admittedly, their recent lineup hasn’t been their best, but whenever they unveil an original story, it always piques my interest. A new one was recently announced at Destination D23 as part of the 2026 movie schedule, and I can’t help but share the news and ask a question that has crossed my mind.

Walt Disney Animation Announced Its Latest Movie, And It’s Not A Sequel

This weekend, Destination D23 is happening at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort within Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida. The event began on Saturday morning with a presentation filled with announcements, one of which was about the upcoming Disney animation release following Zootopia 2 this year – an original movie titled Hexed. In recent years, Walt Disney Animation Studios has favored simple, one-word titles, such as “Encanto,” “Wish,” and others. Moving forward, we have an upcoming film titled “Hexed” scheduled for release on Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 2026. This date coincides with the premiere of the new “Hunger Games” movie and shares a release day with “Focker-In-Law.” As announced, the plot revolves around a teenage boy who unexpectedly uncovers magical abilities. The story seems to primarily focus on the boy and his mother as they navigate the mysterious world of magic together.

In the cinematic landscape between the anticipated arrival of Zootopia 2 and Frozen 3 at Thanksgiving 2027, I find myself eagerly awaiting the release of Hexed. To put it in perspective, Moana 2 was Disney’s autumn offering in 2024 and it turned out to be a game-changer, raking in an astonishing $1.059 billion globally and setting the stage for one of the most successful Thanksgiving weekends before its sequel’s release. Now, if Hexed manages to replicate even a fraction of Moana 2’s success, we’re in for an enchanting ride!

I’m So Curious If Hexed Will Be Another Disney Animated Musical

Let me shift gears and ask you a significant query. I’m curious to find out whether the upcoming movie titled Hexed will feature musical elements or not. Considering that the animation studio often produces both adventure and musical films, it could go either way. However, since there was no immediate announcement about a musical aspect, it seems plausible to speculate that this film may not be a musical.

Over the past five years, Disney Animation has released three musical films, each with varying degrees of popularity. The soundtrack from “Encanto” became incredibly popular and went viral, whereas the response to “Moana 2” seemed divided among the public. Meanwhile, “Wish” didn’t seem to generate much attention or buzz. As a fan of Disney musicals, it seems that I’ll have to wait for “Frozen 3” if I want another hit musical from them, as there doesn’t appear to be any new original one in the works, which is somewhat disappointing.

Setting that aside, I’m excited to learn more about Hexed and I’m hoping for speedy updates on the film soon. In the interim, anticipate the release of Zootopia 2 in theaters on November 26, as part of the 2025 movie lineup.
