The true crime documentary series Homicide, created by Dick Wolf, is back for a third season. This season, like the second, focuses on actual homicide cases from New York City, and its return has quickly made it a hit with viewers on streaming platforms.
Netflix’s Homicide has become a huge hit, racking up over 76.3 million viewing hours. It’s currently a top 10 show in countries like the US and the UK. This success follows the release of Season 2, Homicide: New York, in March. The series began in 2024, initially focusing on cases in New York City. The second season, Homicide: Los Angeles, then shifted its focus to homicide investigations in Los Angeles.
Dick Wolf Dives Into Real-Life Homicides
Dick Wolf is famous for creating hit police dramas like the Law & Order, One Chicago, and FBI series. However, Homicide takes a different approach, focusing on actual cases that deeply affected people in New York and Los Angeles. The first season of Homicide received positive reviews, with an 80% approval rating and a 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Homicide: Los Angeles boasts a 92% audience score and universal critical acclaim, while ratings for the latest season are still pending.
Season 2 of Homicide: New York presents five new cases, with one episode focusing on the city’s experience during the terrorist attacks. The episode features new interviews with first responders, including police officers who bravely ran towards the danger to save lives. It’s a deeply emotional look at that day, sharing stories of officers returning home to their families while remembering those who didn’t make it back.
Dick Wolf’s Homicide Offers a Unique Perspective
While Wikipedia can tell you the facts of these events, it doesn’t capture the personal stories behind them,” explained Jane Lipsitz, the series’ executive producer, to Netflix. “Our series focuses on the impact on the victims’ families and friends, providing important context and creating a deeper emotional connection with viewers.”
According to executive producer Adam Kassen, New York City homicide detectives are split between uptown and downtown Manhattan. Because the NYPD is so large, it’s common for officers to work for years without really getting to know their colleagues. The detectives in this show, however, all have pre-existing connections – they’ve either worked together before or know each other through the force. We built the show around this idea of a close-knit team who genuinely care about solving their cases.
Homicide is streaming on Netflix.
