Dexter: Resurrection season 2 is plotting to bring back an iconic franchise tradition.
Michael C. Hall’s return as Dexter Morgan was a huge success for Showtime, breaking records for the most-watched premiere in the channel’s history. The new season, Dexter: Resurrection, drew 44% more viewers than the prequel, Dexter: Original Sin, and a remarkable 76% more than Dexter: New Blood. It attracted 3.1 million viewers worldwide across all platforms in just its first three days, quickly leading Showtime to renew the series for a second season.
During a recent interview with Ash Crossan from ScreenRant at the Saturn Awards, Dexter star Michael C. Hall discussed his desire to revive the original title sequence for the second season of Dexter: Resurrection. Hall, who is also a producer on the show, mentioned that the team is working to make it happen despite budget constraints, and he’s hopeful they’ll find a way. His full comments are included below.
We’ve already discussed this. I haven’t spoken with the production team about it yet, but the goal is to recreate the original title sequence. We’re working out the logistics, as we’re facing both budget and time constraints. But we’re confident we’ll find a solution – we always do.
The opening credits of Dexter feature the main character performing everyday morning tasks, set to upbeat but slightly eerie music. These ordinary actions – making breakfast, flossing, getting dressed – seem darker and more violent because of who Dexter is. However, the camera quickly pulls back to show that everything is actually normal and harmless.
The opening title sequence was created by the creative studio Digital Kitchen, led by Creative Director Eric Anderson. Anderson and Josh Bodnar handled the editing, and Daniel Licht composed the music. It received an Emmy Award for Outstanding Main Title Design in 2007, and a similar version appeared in the short-lived prequel series, Dexter: Original Sin. However, Dexter: New Blood opted for a faster, montage-style opening instead of the original’s detailed morning routine.
The original sequence became incredibly famous – even The Simpsons made fun of it, showing Ned Flanders doing everyday things in a way that felt strangely unsettling. This highlights how important opening sequences and theme music remain for a show’s lasting impact on popular culture. It paved the way for iconic openings in shows like Friends, Gilmore Girls, and more recently, Succession.
With the rise of streaming, traditional opening credits are becoming rare, as viewers often skip them. If Morgan’s introductory sequence could be included in the next season, as Hall hopes, it would be a positive change. Perhaps other characters from Dexter: Resurrection, like Harrison, could also have similar introductions.
