Dan Trachtenberg has hinted at how a follow-up to Predator: Badlands might introduce a significant new character or element.
The director said they’re still deciding who will play Dek’s mother and what she’ll look like. He didn’t share many details, emphasizing that development is still in its early stages.
Introduction and design of Dek’s Mom teased for Predator: Badlands 2
In a ScreenRant interview, director Dan Trachtenberg hinted at plans to introduce the mother of the character Dek in a future Predator film. He explained that while female Yautja have appeared in comics, the team is currently prioritizing developing her personality and backstory before focusing on her visual design.
Trachtenberg wants the character’s introduction to be surprising and avoid clichés. He plans to focus on the interesting aspects of the Yautja culture, and they won’t necessarily be following the way the creatures have been depicted in the comics.
As author Trachtenberg has pointed out, female Predator characters have shown up in various comics and novels related to the franchise. Currently, the only official source to include them is the video game Predator: Hunting Grounds, where players can select a female Predator to play in online matches.
At the very end of the film, I saw Dek’s mom show up just as the Predators were collecting his sword and gearing up for another battle. It was intense! I also learned that director Trachtenberg is already working on the next Predator movie, but he’s still brainstorming ideas for it, which is really exciting.
The director has talked about several possibilities for the next Predator movie, such as revisiting Prey 2, making a sequel to The Badlands, or picking up the story right after where Predator: Killer of Killers left off. He plans to work on this sequel while also focusing on other films he’s committed to through his deal with Paramount Pictures.
Predator: Badlands was the most financially successful film in the Predator series, increasing the chances of seeing more stories with the character Dek. The ending, which leaves Naru stranded on the Yautja homeworld, opens the possibility of a future movie where Dek faces off against his own mother.
You can watch the movie on Hulu, and it will be available on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD starting February 17th. Elle Fanning plays Thia, and Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi plays Dek. Dan Trachtenberg directed the film, which first premiered on November 5, 2025, and runs for 107 minutes.
