The first trailer for the DCU’s ‘Lanterns‘ is out, signaling a new approach to television shows within the DC Universe. While Peter Safran and James Gunn’s DCU is just beginning, it already includes two series – ‘Creature Commandos’ and ‘Peacemaker’ – and one film, ‘Superman’.
Alongside the iconic Superman, several other DC heroes were introduced, such as Mr. Terrific, Hawkgirl, Metamorphosis, and Guy Gardner. Gardner marks the beginning of the Green Lanterns in the DC Universe, and two new Lanterns will appear in the 2026 film, Lanterns.
The upcoming series follows Hal Jordan and John Stewart as they solve a puzzling case in a quiet American town. The recently released trailer suggests it shares a common style with other shows in the DC Universe.
Lanterns Is The Latest DCU Series That’s Made For A Mature Audience
The series Lanterns stars Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart. The initial trailer suggests a *True Detectivelike atmosphere, with the two Green Lanterns investigating events in a close-knit town. Though Jordan is more experienced, Stewart challenges his approach, leading to conflict between the two heroes.
The trailer suggests this series is intended for mature viewers, largely due to its serious tone and the use of strong language. There are multiple instances of cursing, including two from the main character, Jordan, and some from Kelly Macdonald’s character, a sheriff. This aligns with other mature DC Universe series like Lanterns, indicating a trend for the TV shows within that universe.
Both Creature Commandos and Peacemaker are designed for mature viewers, containing graphic violence, strong language, and adult themes. If Lanterns follows suit, it suggests the DC Universe is primarily creating content for adults, though that could change with future shows.
The DCU’s Films Are More Family-Friendly, Though It Is Experimenting With R-Rated Content
The DC Universe’s TV shows aim for a more adult audience, but its movies are designed to appeal to a wider range of viewers. For example, Superman received a PG-13 rating, and the upcoming Supergirl movie in 2026 will probably be rated the same. Although the Supergirl trailer suggests some mature content, it appears the film will be similar to Superman in terms of its overall rating.
The DC Universe is now considering making movies with mature themes and ratings. A film about the Batman villain Clayface, planned for release in 2026, is expected to be particularly dark and graphic. Because of the nature of Clayface’s powers and how he became who he is, the movie will likely show a disturbing and visually intense transformation.
It’s interesting that DC is exploring more adult-oriented stories, such as with the Lanterns project. While R-rated superhero movies like Deadpool have proven successful, DC seems to be taking a different approach with Superman and Supergirl, aiming for broader, family-friendly appeal.
