Aaron Pierre, known for his role in Lanterns, has spoken about losing his part in the upcoming Marvel movie Blade. While he’s now set to play Green Lantern John Stewart in the DC Universe, Pierre was initially cast in Blade alongside Mahershala Ali. However, due to repeated delays and changes to the script, he was ultimately removed from the project.
In an interview with Men’s Health, actor Pierre spoke about being removed from the cast of Blade. He remembered being thrilled when he was originally cast, but learned a valuable lesson: a role isn’t official until you actually start filming. Pierre didn’t share specifics about his intended character or the reason for his departure, simply stating that the film went in a different direction and he was no longer needed, a situation he said you have to accept.
Aaron Pierre joined the cast of Blade in February 2022, when the movie was expected to come out in November 2023. He was cast right before starting work on Rebel Ridge. However, after being involved for two years, Pierre announced in March 2024 that he was no longer part of the Marvel film. He told Variety that while there were initial discussions, his role disappeared as the movie’s plans changed. Many assumed he had left the project, and it now seems the character he was meant to play has been removed from the film entirely. It’s likely this happened because the original concept for Blade – which was set in the past – was changed to a modern-day setting, and his character no longer fit.
The Troubled Development of ‘Blade’

Netflix
Marvel Studios’ Blade movie has faced a lot of challenges during its development. After announcing Mahershala Ali as the lead in 2019, the film has gone through multiple changes with directors and writers, leading to repeated delays and its removal from the planned release schedule. Actor Pierre isn’t the only one who’s left the project; Delroy Lindo, who was set to star in Sinners, is no longer involved either. So far, we’ve only seen versions of Blade in the Marvel Cinematic Universe through a voice cameo in Eternals, the return of Wesley Snipes in Deadpool & Wolverine, and a different version in Marvel Zombies.
I’ve been so impressed watching Pierre’s career take off! It feels like just yesterday Rebel Ridge dropped on Netflix in September 2024 and everyone was talking about it. Then, in October, he landed the role of John Stewart in Lanterns – it’s clear he’s becoming a major talent and I fully expect him to be a huge part of the DC Universe for years to come. Even though things didn’t work out with Blade, he’s found so much success elsewhere. I loved hearing him as Mufasa in Mufasa: The Lion King this year, and I’m already counting down the days until Star Wars: Starfighter comes out in May 2027! It’s a shame Blade is still nowhere in sight, especially with Marvel so focused on massive projects like Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars. It looks like we might not see that one until 2028, if at all.
