So, I’ve been following the drama around the new Blade movie, and now we’re getting some answers from a DC actor who was originally cast. He’s explained that the project kept changing direction creatively, and ultimately, that’s why he had to walk away. It sounds like the vision for the film just wasn’t solid enough, and he didn’t want to stick around while things were so uncertain.
DC’s Aaron Pierre on what happened with his Blade role
Aaron Pierre, who was originally cast in Marvel’s Blade, explained that he left the project because of changes to the story and direction. He told Men’s Health that being cast is exciting, but real work doesn’t begin until filming starts. Ultimately, the project went in a different direction, and he was no longer involved, something he said he had to accept.
As a huge Marvel fan, I’ve been following the Blade reboot ever since it was announced at Comic-Con in 2019, and honestly, it’s been a bit of a rollercoaster! They’ve changed the script and the director so many times, and kept pushing back the release date. It was originally planned for November 2023, but now it’s been taken off the schedule altogether. I heard they were even debating whether to set it in the roaring twenties or the present day, with several different writers – like Beau DeMayo, Nic Pizzolatto, and Eric Pearson – all taking a shot at the story. I’m still hopeful we’ll eventually see it, but it’s been a long wait!
Several actors, including Aaron Pierre and Delroy Lindo, departed the film due to ongoing changes to the creative direction. Mahershala Ali stars as the Daywalker, and Mia Goth plays the villain, Lilith. Marvel has not yet announced when the movie will be released.
Following his role in Blade, Pierre has joined the DC Universe to play John Stewart, a groundbreaking character as the first Black Green Lantern, in the new HBO series Lanterns. The show, led by showrunner Chris Mundy, will feature Pierre alongside Kyle Chandler, who plays Hal Jordan. The series will explore the dynamic between these two Lanterns from different generations. Pierre described his character as embodying both “strength and fortitude,” and he’s dedicated to portraying him in a genuine and responsible way.
The Blade movie is still being worked on, and the Lanterns series will mark Pierre’s significant debut in the revamped DC Universe.
