If Netflix were to buy Warner Bros. Pictures, it would probably change how it releases films in cinemas.
Warner Bros. Discovery, led by David Zaslav, is exploring a potential sale. Companies that have expressed interest include Paramount Skydance, Netflix, and Comcast. However, any agreement is still a long way off, as these deals are complex and require careful consideration.
What does Netflix’s theatrical plan look like regarding the company’s WB bid?
Okay, so I just read this report, and apparently Netflix told Warner Bros. Discovery that if they actually do end up buying them, they’ll continue to release Warner Bros. movies in cinemas – but only if those movies are doing well! It basically sounds like Netflix is saying, ‘We’ll keep showing your films in theaters if people are still going to see them.’
So, I’m hearing that Netflix is seriously considering honoring Warner Bros.’ existing theater release deals if they were to acquire the studio. Apparently, Netflix has always been resistant to showing its films in cinemas – they’ve built a massive business without doing that. But the lure of owning Warner Bros.’ incredible catalog of films, combined with those pre-existing commitments to theaters, seems to be changing their mind. It’s a big shift, and suggests they’re willing to compromise their previous strategy if it means getting their hands on that library.
Since Warner Bros. Discovery currently owns DC Studios, a Netflix acquisition wouldn’t necessarily stop fans from seeing DC superheroes in theaters. However, it’s still unclear what Netflix would do with DC’s upcoming movie plans if they were to buy the studio.
Bloomberg reports that bids for Warner Bros. Discovery are due on Tuesday.
According to reports, Netflix is considering a deal that would be its biggest yet. Company leaders recently presented their proposal to Warner Bros. executives. Many in the film industry are concerned that a partnership between Warner Bros. and Netflix could lead to fewer major movie studios and a decrease in films shown in theaters. Netflix has occasionally released films in theaters for short periods to meet awards eligibility requirements and keep actors and filmmakers happy.
