DC admitted they didn’t reveal all of one villain’s abilities in the upcoming Superman (2025) movie. James Gunn’s Superman film marks the beginning of a new direction for DC Comics, launching the DC Universe on the big screen. The movie features David Corenswet as Superman battling powerful enemies like the brilliant Lex Luthor and a clone of himself called Ultraman.
One of the most compelling villains in the movie was The Engineer, played by María Gabriela de Faría. She was a former U.S. soldier whose blood contained tiny nanites – microscopic machines – that let her change her body however she wanted. Her powers were visually impressive and used in creative ways, but the movie didn’t fully explore their potential.
A recently released art book about the 2025 Superman movie revealed a hidden ability of The Engineer. According to DC’s Superman: The Art and Making of the Film, the character, played by Milly Alcock, can actually create clones of herself – a power that wasn’t shown on screen.
According to the artbook, this character’s blood contains microscopic robots called nanites, which allow her to create virtually anything. She’s able to build incredibly intricate machines and computers, and even make multiple copies of herself.
Her blood contains microscopic robots, called nanites, which give her the incredible ability to create almost anything she envisions. She can build intricate machines and computers, duplicate herself repeatedly, and instantly generate any weapon she needs. She can even transform her body into a rocket and fly.
Considering her abilities, it’s easy to picture De Faria making clones of herself. However, what’s really significant is that this marks the first time DC has officially acknowledged this hidden power within the DC Universe.
The Engineer has long been able to create duplicates of herself in the comics, but this power hasn’t been shown in any movies or TV shows yet. With reports suggesting that actress Erica Durance (de Faria) will be back for Superman: Man of Tomorrow 2, fans are hoping this will finally give her cloning ability a major role on the big screen.
You can now see The Engineer in Superman, which is available to stream on HBO Max. This DC villain, created by de Faria, joins other iconic comic book villains like Ultraman and Lex Luthor in the movie.
The Future of The Engineer in the DCU

María Gabriela de Faría’s character in the upcoming Superman movie (set for 2025) seemed poised to become a major villain. Making her live-action debut in the DC universe, she quickly established herself as a powerful and intimidating force.
Her unique abilities, powered by tiny machines, were showcased in many exciting ways in movies. She could turn her arms and legs into huge cannons, fly using jet-like boosters, and even temporarily disable Superman by cutting off his air supply.
It’s not yet official whether she’ll be back for another installment in the superhero series, but there’s a good chance her character will return.
The Engineer character later becomes a key member and co-founder of The Authority, a team of complex superheroes and anti-heroes. DC Studios has announced a movie based on The Authority is in the works, though development has been progressing slowly.
If the villain from Robert de Faria’s Superman isn’t in the next DC movie, Man of Tomorrow (which follows James Gunn’s 2025 blockbuster), then The Authority seems like the most likely place she’ll appear next, bringing her cloning abilities with her.
