DC Reintroduces Darkseid in Mister Miracle Animated Series Under Direction of Tom King, DCU Status Uncertain

Darkseid, a classic villain from DC Comics, is returning to the screen. He was originally planned for the movie *Justice League* but was cut, then played a significant part in *Zack Snyder’s Justice League* with Ray Porter providing his voice. Now, Darkseid will appear in the upcoming *Mister Miracle* project from DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation.

It’s currently unknown whether the upcoming limited series will officially introduce Darkseid into the main DC Universe or exist as a separate story in the ‘Elseworlds’ collection. However, sources at Nexus Point News report that Darkseid in *Mister Miracle* is portrayed as the ultimate embodiment of evil. Despite this terrifying role, he’s said to speak in a surprisingly comical and exaggerated way, contrasting with his otherwise calm and self-assured personality.

Darkseid, Mister Miracle, and The Showrunner

On June 12, 2025, DC announced a new adult animated series called *Mister Miracle*. The show is based on the award-winning 12-issue comic book by Tom King and Mitch Gerads. It will follow Scott Free, also known as Mister Miracle, a master escape artist. The story begins with Scott’s adoptive father, the villain Darkseid, seemingly on the verge of obtaining the Anti-Life Equation, a weapon that would allow him to control the entire universe.

I’m hearing from sources that the upcoming *Mister Miracle* film isn’t just focusing on Darkseid and Scott Free. We can expect to see a whole host of New Gods, including Big Barda, Highfather, Lightray, Orion, and even the wonderfully weird Funky Flashman. What’s really exciting is that it sounds like the movie is going to be very faithful to Tom King’s incredible run of the comic from 2017-2019. That’s a great sign for fans!

I’m really excited about the direction James Gunn and Peter Safran are taking the DCU, and a big part of that seems to be Tom King. He’s not just showrunning a new series, *Lanterns*, for HBO Max – he’s writing and producing it too! But it doesn’t stop there. King actually wrote the comic books that the upcoming *Supergirl* movie is based on, so his vision is already deeply woven into the fabric of this new universe. He’s clearly a key creative force, and I’m eager to see how his contributions shape things.

Stephen King is often seen as an author who sparks strong reactions, and his stories frequently cause debate.

While *Supergirl* might bring in a new big bad guy, it looks like Darkseid will appear only on television for now.

Reintroducing Darkseid

Darkseid, a villain first appearing in DC Comics in 1970, isn’t just interested in conquering worlds. His ultimate goal is to take away free will from everyone in the universe and impose his own control. Over the years, he’s become a popular character in animated series and films like *Superman: The Animated Series*, with a variety of actors voicing him – from Michael Ironside and Tony Todd to even “Weird Al” Yankovic on *Teen Titans Go!*

Zack Snyder initially intended to feature the villain Darkseid in the *Justice League* movie. But when Joss Whedon stepped in to finish the film, Darkseid was cut completely, a change many fans believed further damaged the movie. Darkseid became a frequent request from fans campaigning for the release of Snyder’s original version of the film, known as the Snyder Cut.

Considering how popular Darkseid is, it’s unexpected that Tom King would bring the character back before James Gunn, especially given King’s significant role at DC Comics and within the DC Universe.

When and Where Will We See Darkseid?

The *Mister Miracle* series is currently being developed, and we don’t yet know when or where it will be released. However, HBO Max is a strong possibility for the show’s home.

It’s unclear if audiences will embrace an animated version of Darkseid, or hold out for a live-action one. Their reaction might actually depend more on their existing fondness for the character as portrayed in the comics than anything happening with the DC Universe or its alternate stories.
