The Batman/Static: Beyond miniseries offers a new take on the future of the DC Animated Universe. The main villain shares some similarities with Electro from the Spider-Man films, but ultimately has a backstory rooted in Batman Beyond lore and becomes a major foe for Static.
Batman/Static: Beyond, created by Evan Narcisse and Nikolas Draper-Ivey, brings together two fan-favorite heroes in a story set 20 years from now. While it shares some similarities with previous DC animated universes, this version of Dakota City is rooted in the world of Milestone Media. The main difference is the origin of Static and the other ‘Bang Babies,’ who gained their powers at a protest instead of a gang fight.
Virgil Hawkins, now a successful tech entrepreneur and known superhero Static, is preparing to open a new power plant in Neo-Gotham. The plant will run on Q-Juice, the same energy source that gave him his powers. Meanwhile, Terry McGinnis is still a high school student and newly taking on the role of Batman. The opening of the plant has sparked protests at Terry’s school, and one of the protesters will eventually become a key ally – Electro – to Terry’s Batman, much like Spider-Man and his supporting characters.
Who is Batman/Static: Beyond’s Shutdown?
A raid by the Jokerz gang causes a leak of Q-Juice at a plant, and protester Melvin Kim is exposed. Melvin is a gifted but withdrawn individual with a strong dislike of technology. This stems from his childhood – his parents were programmers who prioritized their work over him. It’s also suggested that Melvin has a unique ability: he can hear machines, which is intensely painful in the technologically advanced world of Batman/Static: Beyond. He finds solace only in nature. This makes him a key member of a growing anti-technology movement, fueled by fears that Static’s new power plants could create more people with unusual abilities.
Static created safety measures to stop another major disaster, but they weren’t turned on during the Q-Grid gala. This caused an accident that boosted Melvin’s existing powers and made him even more sensitive to technology. Now, Melvin can also absorb and redirect electricity, just like Static, and even teleport by turning into energy. Calling himself Shutdown, Melvin begins attacking Static’s businesses.
Okay, so Shutdown is the villain in this new arc, and honestly, he’s a really compelling one. He’s got a bit of an Electro vibe with his powers, but what’s cool is how well he works against both Batman Beyond and Static. He’s a teen, just like Terry McGinnis was in Batman Beyond, and the accident that gave him powers plays a big part in his story. But even without the powers, Shutdown is fascinating. He’s driven by wanting to end his own suffering, but also by a genuine belief that he’s fighting against a crooked businessman whose tech is harming people. That last part really struck me, because it echoes Static’s own struggles against Edwin Alva and the whole Q-Juice mess. It’s a really clever parallel, showing how Shutdown could have easily been Virgil Hawkins if things had gone differently.
