HBO is creating a new TV series based on J.K. Rowling’s books, not long after the movie series finished. This version will be distinct, with a completely different group of actors.
David Thewlis recently spoke with ScreenTime about the possibility of reprising his role as Remus Lupin. The actor famously played the beloved character in multiple Harry Potter movies.
When asked if he’d be open to reprising his role as Remus Lupin or another character, David Thewlis joked that he’s likely too old to play the part again. This feels accurate, particularly considering the new project is set much further in the future than the original films.
David Thewlis was 41 years old when he first appeared as Professor Lupin in the 2004 film, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Interestingly, his character was meant to be around 33 or 34 years old. This age difference also applied to other characters: Alan Rickman, who played Severus Snape, was 58, while Gary Oldman, as Sirius Black, was 46.
The actor said they have no desire to revisit that role or topic, admitting they’ve discussed it enough and are frankly tired of it.
He explained that he enjoyed working on Harry Potter because it brought joy to children, who were often very impressed and excited by the films. It was rewarding to make kids happy.
David Thewlis joins Daniel Radcliffe in expressing hesitation about returning for the new Harry Potter series. Radcliffe, who famously played Harry himself, prefers letting the new show stand on its own. Currently, Warwick Davis is the only original cast member confirmed to return, reprising his role as Professor Flitwick.
The Harry Potter series is expected to premiere on HBO in early 2027.
