David Spade, a well-known actor and comedian, really wanted a role on a popular sitcom when he was starting out. Although he didn’t get the part, he eventually found success in Hollywood, but he still remembers feeling let down by the rejection.
It’s been said that David Spade auditioned for the role of Joey Gladstone on Full House, which ultimately went to Dave Coulier. In a recent interview with Esquire, Spade confirmed he did try out for the part – one of his earliest auditions – but he didn’t think he was seriously considered for it.
David Spade Could Have Played Uncle Joey
Spade admits he did audition for Friends. He explains that it was one of the first auditions he had after starting to gain some recognition, and he read for the part of Joey. He jokingly adds that he didn’t come very close to getting the role.
You know, David Spade was talking about how he didn’t get a role in In the Heat of the Night years ago, and it really bothered him. He said if he had gotten that part, things could have gone very differently for his career. Looking back, everything eventually worked out, but at the time, constantly facing rejection was genuinely tough on him – it messed with his head, honestly. It was a really rough period, and he admitted it took a mental toll when he kept missing out on roles.
Spade isn’t the only famous actor who tried out for Full House but didn’t get a part. David Duchovny, known for The X-Files, also auditioned – in fact, he read for all three of the main male roles: Joey Gladstone, Danny Tanner, and Jesse Katsopolis. Luckily, the show found the perfect cast, and it’s hard for Full House fans to imagine anyone else in those roles now.
The Full House Casting Worked Out Well in the End
Besides Bob Saget, Full House featured Candace Cameron Bure as D.J. Tanner and Jodie Sweetin as Stephanie Tanner. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen famously played Danny Tanner’s youngest daughter, Michelle. Andrea Barber played Kimmy Gibbler, the Tanner family’s neighbor and D.J.’s best friend, and Lori Loughlin later joined the show as Rebecca Donaldson, Danny’s coworker who eventually married Uncle Jesse and became part of the family. All of the original cast members – except Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen – returned for the Netflix sequel, Fuller House.
David Spade is a comedian I’ve been watching for years, and he really broke out with his time on Saturday Night Live. A lot of people remember him fondly from those hilarious 90s comedies, Black Sheep and Tommy Boy, alongside the late, great Chris Farley. He also proved he could carry a show on his own with Just Shoot Me!, earning some well-deserved Emmy and Golden Globe nods. And he’s still making us laugh – I recently caught Busboys, where he played perfectly off Theo Von. He’s consistently funny, and it’s great to see him keep delivering.
