The new HBO dark comedy, DTF St. Louis, has released its first trailer. The series, premiering March 1st, stars David Harbour (known from Stranger Things) and Jason Bateman (Black Rabbit) as lifelong friends, Floyd and Clark. They decide to use the ‘Down to F’ dating app – known as DTF – to add some excitement to their routines. However, things quickly go wrong when Clark is found dead.
A detective (Richard Jenkins, from Step Brothers) informs someone that they introduced the victim to DTF St. Louis, and now that person is dead. The detective and Special Crimes agent Jodie Plumb (Joy Sunday, from Wednesday) then go to interview the victim’s wife, Carol (Linda Cardellini, from Dead to Me). As the investigation progresses, it’s revealed that Carol and another man, Clark, were having an affair and might be connected to the death. The series, created by Steven Conrad (Ultra City Smiths), also stars Chris Perfetti (Abbott Elementary) and Peter Sarsgaard (The Batman).
This month, Conrad spoke with Vanity Fair and shared that he intentionally used people’s existing ideas about the setting to enhance his new work.
I initially considered naming the show DTF Chicago, but it didn’t quite sound right. I chose to set it in the Midwest because people often assume life there is simpler or more ordinary. Using St. Louis allowed me to subvert those expectations and reveal the unexpected things happening beneath the surface in a place people perceive as calm and peaceful.
‘DTF St. Louis’ Looked Very Different At One Time
Originally, the show DTF St. Louis was a straightforward retelling of James Lasdun’s true-crime article, “My Dentist’s Murder Trial,” which appeared in The New Yorker nine years prior. The article detailed the 2015 trial of Dr. Gilberto Nunez, a dentist who had an affair with his friend’s wife, Linda Kolman. He pretended to be a CIA agent to pressure her into leaving her husband, but when she wouldn’t, his threats of suicide turned violent.
Security footage shows Kolman and Nunez together in the gym’s parking lot for 28 minutes the morning Kolman reportedly died. Only Nunez drove away. Investigators found the sedative Midazolam in Kolman’s system, along with vials of the drug and a search for it on his computer at the dentist’s office.

From the start, Harbour was the clear choice to play the victim in the story. Originally, Pedro Pascal (known for his roles in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, The Last of Us, and Game of Thrones) was set to play the killer. However, he ultimately left the project – possibly due to scheduling issues – after building a good working relationship with the network, leading to a change in plans.
