David Corenswet Ruled Over James Gunn on This Superman Scene

David Corenswet and Jonathan Bailey recently chatted about their new movies and the challenges of being an actor. Corenswet shared a surprising story about disagreeing with director James Gunn on set while filming a memorable scene for the movie Superman, giving fans a unique look at how creative decisions are made in Hollywood.

David Corenswet discussed what it was like playing Clark Kent/Superman in an interview with Jonathan Bailey for Variety’s Actors on Actors.

While talking about a scene from her new movie, Wicked: For Good, Bailey shared that a kiss between Corenswet and his co-star at the end of Superman was, in her opinion, their most charming moment together.

He pointed out the small smile Superman gave when Lois Lane told him she loved the hero who saved her. David Corenswet explained that director James Gunn wasn’t initially happy with Corenswet’s performance of that moment. Corenswet recalled that while he was chuckling during the scene, and after Lois said ‘I love you too,’ Gunn told him it wasn’t quite right and they might revisit it when filming the sequel.

Corenswet described a direction from Gunn for a scene to be serious. He recalled responding that the line should instead convey a confident, ‘I know you love me.’ Corenswet believes Gunn was right about almost everything, but he felt that particular chuckle felt authentic. Bailey added that grounding such a large film like Superman in these small, genuine moments is what truly makes a lead actor succeed.
