Dave Filoni Is Just As Surprised as Star Wars Fans That This ‘Clone Wars’ Character Is Returning In Live-Action

Dave Filoni, one of the new co-CEOs of Lucasfilm, has expressed his own surprise, alongside Star Wars fans, that a seemingly minor character from The Clone Wars will play a significant part in The Mandalorian and Grogu. Rotta the Hutt was introduced in the 2008 Star Wars: The Clone Wars movie as Jabba the Hutt’s young son, who was kidnapped in a plot by Count Dooku to make it look like the Jedi were responsible. Anakin Skywalker and his apprentice, Ahsoka Tano, successfully rescued Rotta and returned him home. Although Rotta originally served as a plot device, he’s now poised to become a central character in The Mandalorian and Grogu.

Dave Filoni and George Lucas originally created the character Rotta the Hutt for the animated series Clone Wars. It appears even Filoni was surprised when Rotta unexpectedly appeared in live-action. While promoting The Mandalorian and Grogu to Empire Magazine, Filoni confessed he “never imagined” he’d be involved in a live-action project featuring the character.

When I started at Lucasfilm, I never expected that two decades later, I’d be involved in a live-action movie featuring Rotta.

During the same interview, Jon Favreau, director of The Mandalorian and Grogu, explained that the character Rotta in the movie is similar to Adonis Creed from Creed. He said Rotta’s story will focus on him trying to establish his own identity and escape being defined by his father’s legacy.

It’s interesting to consider what it’s like to build a reputation when you’re already well-known, especially as the child of someone famous like Jabba the Hutt. How does that background shape someone’s path? I find that a really compelling question.

Interestingly, Jon Favreau, not Dave Filoni, championed the inclusion of Rotta the Hutt in the film. This appears to be Favreau’s way of showcasing his fondness for the Hutt species and paying tribute to a longtime friend’s work within the Star Wars galaxy.

Jeremy Allen White, who voices the character Rotta, added that the story will focus on Rotta’s journey to establish his own identity.

“Rotta is trying to become his own man and get out of the shadow of the Hutt name.”

Dave Filoni clearly enjoyed seeing Rotta the Hutt appear in live-action in The Mandalorian and Grogu, and it was a special moment for a key creative force behind Star Wars. The character’s appearance felt like a callback to Filoni’s early work on The Clone Wars animated series, bringing things full circle.

Rotta the Hutt is shaping up to be a key character in the upcoming Mandalorian and Grogu movie, and it’s interesting to consider how Din Djarin and Grogu will influence his development.

Jon Favreau’s new movie, The Mandalorian and Grogu, continues the adventures of these popular characters as they help the New Republic clear out the last of the Empire’s forces throughout the galaxy. It will be released in theaters on May 22nd.

Why Rotta the Hutt Is Positioned as Mando & Grogu’s Breakout Character

Rotta the Hutt has the potential to become a fan favorite in The Mandalorian and Grogu thanks to his unpredictable personality and interesting backstory, which is connected to creator Dave Filoni.

Adding to the excitement, the casting is excellent thanks to Jeremy Allen White’s participation.

Rotta the Hutt is expected to have a significant and engaging role in the new Star Wars movie, with scenes featuring Din Djarin and Grogu that could become iconic. This expanded role moves Rotta beyond simply being a plot device and makes him a key part of the story.

Ultimately, the reimagining of Rotta the Hutt highlights one of Dave Filoni’s biggest successes within the Star Wars universe.
