Darth Maul Theory Teases The Return Of A Surprising Star Wars Villain In Shadow Lord

The new Star Wars series focusing on Darth Maul might feature a powerful dark side villain from his past. Called Shadow Lord, the show is set during a dark period of the Empire’s reign and will depict Maul building his influence in the criminal world while also taking on a new apprentice. This apprenticeship could be the reason a familiar, formidable enemy resurfaces.

A new Star Wars theory has emerged thanks to recent comments from actor Sam Witwer, who plays Maul. The theory suggests that Savage Opress, Maul’s brother, could reappear in the ‘Shadow Lord’ storyline.

Sam Witwer Confirmed The Lasting Importance of Savage Opress In Shadow Lord (Maul’s Brother)

I was really fascinated to read the latest issue of Star Wars Insider (as reported by Star Wars Holocron) where Sam Witwer shared some incredible details about Maul. He talked about a part of Maul’s life we haven’t really seen before, and it gave me a whole new appreciation for his character. He also discussed Maul’s brother, Savage Opress – a powerful dark side villain from The Clone Wars – and how crucial Savage was in bringing Maul back after his defeat in The Phantom Menace. It’s amazing to think Savage eventually became Maul’s first apprentice!

He’s reflecting on his own identity and also thinking about his brother, Savage Opress, who was his first apprentice and like family. He’s realizing he didn’t treat Savage as well as he should have, despite Savage’s loyalty, and is now acknowledging that he let him down.

It seems Maul’s history with his brother, Savage, will continue to be important in the Shadow Lord comic series. We’ll likely see this play out as Maul tries to train a new apprentice – possibly Darth Talon, a character already established in Star Wars lore – in the form of the former Jedi, Devon Izara.

It’s easy to picture Maul attempting to fix the errors he and Savage made, and dealing with past regrets. However, it makes you think – could Savage have had a more significant part in the events of Shadow Lord than we currently know?

How Savage Could Make An Appearance In Shadow Lord (Despite His Clone Wars Death)

Savage Opress died on Mandalore during the Clone Wars when Darth Sidious unexpectedly arrived. Sidious killed him because he was concerned about the growing power of Maul.

It would be really interesting to see Savage’s ghost appear to Maul, perhaps in a Force vision during the dark times, or even in flashbacks to their time together during The Clone Wars. This could show us new parts of their story that weren’t revealed in the original animated series.

It might seem far-fetched, but we should also think about the magic practiced by the Nightsisters on Dathomir. They’ve brought people back to life in other parts of the Star Wars story, so their power could be a way to revive Maul’s brother. Plus, we know Maul went back to Dathomir during a difficult period after the Clone Wars.

It all started with Mother Talzin of the Nightsisters. She was the one who united the brothers, giving Savage immense strength and healing Maul, both physically and mentally, after Savage discovered his brother.

It would be fantastic to hear Clancy Brown reprise his role as Savage Opress, no matter how that might happen. He’s also recently appeared in other Star Wars shows like The Mandalorian and Ahsoka, playing different characters. This shows he’s still involved with the Star Wars universe and has a good working relationship with Lucasfilm.

Don’t rule out the possibility of Savage Opress appearing in the upcoming Maul – Shadow Lord series before it even premieres.
